An album of views of South Australia and the Northern Territory, believed to be taken during the inspection of the 1890 Royal Pastoral Commission, comprising photographs of: the 1890 members of the Royal Pastoral Commission, including members of the Pastoral Commission riding camels, horses and in wagons whilst travelling from place to place and making camp in various locations, as well as locations in Morgan, Murkbo, the Murray River, residents of Anna Creek, Beetaloo Dam, Charlotte Waters, Crown Point, the Macdonnell Ranges, the Alice Springs telegraph station, Melrose and Mount Remarkable, Wirrabara forest, Port Germein Gorge, and Horrocks Creek and Horrocks Pass in the Flinders Ranges.

Portraits of members of the Board of Governors and Officers of the Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia

One of three albums containing portraits of members of the Board of Governors and Officers of the Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia. A first group of portraits was assembled in 1884-1886, and included 'gentlemen who have been Governors of the South Australian Institute from its establishment in 1856, and of the Public Library since 1884'. These were added to subsequently, with three volumes compiled to 1940. The caption for each photograph has the date of appointment or date of election to the Board of Governors. The contributors to the albums were asked upon submitting their photograph, to indicate the date of the photograph if possible. These dates of photographs have been shown in brackets.

Papers of Sir John Cockburn

Papers relating to Sir John Cockburn, former Premier of South Australia, comprising monographs "The records of the Cockburn family" by Sir Robert Cockburn c.1913 and "The house of Cockburn of that ilk and cadets therof" by Thomas H. Cockburn-Hood c.1888 and John Cockburn's "Roll of the National Australian Convention which met in Sydney, 2nd March 1891" with a full page newspaper clipping of the event, and similarly for the 2nd Convention in 1897. Also includes a letter from young 'J.A. Cockburn' to his mother, family trees, a copy of 'Gray's Elegy' and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to John Cockburn. Other items include commissions, appointments, a birth certificate and extracts of an entry in a register of marriages, a testimonial, a certificate from the South Australian Medical Board, a personal invitation to the opening of the establishment of Parliament in Canberra and documentation pertaining to his knighthood and a photograph taken of him in later life in London.

Brewster's Store, Main St., Kapunda

Brewster's Store, corner of Main and Tod Streets, Kapunda. Robert Brewster opened the store in late 1869. He died on 24 June 1890 after which his wife, Mary was storekeeper until 1902 with Robert Fisher managing the business for a time after Robert's death in 1890. The building was known as Brewster's Store and then Brewster's Buildings and later becoming Hambour's Haberdashery and Clothing Store

Globe Hotel, Wallaroo

WALLAROO: The Globe Hotel, Wallaroo; the hotel was leased to Sarah Jane Francis (formerly Nottle) from 1890-1895, she is the shortest woman standing in front of a window with her husband, William Francis, and their four daughters, left to right: Jane, Margaret, Alice, and Elizabeth (sitting). A note on the back of the photograph states "Built by W. Square (late of Gawler Town). Since building the above he has made additional alterations. The luxury of baths will be added to the establishment." This is an abstract from an advertisement in JB Austin's "Mines of South Australia", 1863. This single storey building existed from 1861 and was also known as the Globe Hotel and the Weerona Hotel. It was built by W. Square in 1861. Mrs Sarah Francis was the proprietor from 1890-1895.

Robert William Botting

Robert William Botting

Robert William Botting, a carpenter from London (1818-1890). With his brothers Fred and Frank he established a carpentry and joinery business in Adelaide. They helped construct many buildings including the Bank of Australasia. During the Depression he opened a butchery business. He also worked at the Bendigo Gold Fields and farmed on Hindmarsh Island. He moved his family to New Zealand where he opened a successful butchery business and also mined gold. He died in New Zealand in 1890.

Album of photographs by H. Y. L. Brown, SA Government Geologist, thought to have been taken during an expedition with camels to the MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory in May 1890. The photographs cover part of the journey, from Alice Springs to Emily Gap, Arltunga gold fields, Paddy's Hole, Claraville, Hart's Range, Glen Helen Station, Mount Sonder, Haast's Bluff, and the Finke River. Some photographs are loose and have been trimmed to half pages. Two photographs are missing, captioned 'Chamber's Pillar, Finke River SA' and 'M.C. Wiltshire & native police, Boggy Waterhole, Finke River'.

Owners: H Adamson, registered Aberdeen, later J Shepherd and Co., registered Aberdeen, mid 1880's G Milne and Co., early 1890's sold to Norway and renamed 'Holmenkollen'. While owned by Milne, who about 1890 commenced to name his ships Inver- and thus the Inver Line, this ship appears to be out of place].
