Cabinet card portrait of Edith Emily Dornwell in academic dress. She was born in 1865 in Auckland, New Zealand to Bernhardt Carl Friedrich Dornwell and Sarah Ann (nee Phillips). She moved to Adelaide with her family and studied at the Advanced School for Girls. She was the first woman in Australia to graduate with a science degree, the first woman to graduate from the University of Adelaide, and the first person to graduate with a science degree at the University of Adelaide. She married Lionel Charles Raymond in 1895, and had two sons.
