Clarendon House, Hindley Street

[General description] Clarendon House is a three storey Georgian style stone building with dormer windows on its top floor and a widow's walk, built by Robert and Mary Thomas, pioneers and proprietors of the Register newspaper. On the right is their home, Rhantregwynwen Cottage, named after Robert's birthplace in Wales. The group of people at the front door are probably the family. Amongst the people shown in the street are a gentleman on horseback, a man driving a bullock team and some Aborigines. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 56 / 1840 / See Mary Thomas' "Diary and Letters", p. 150. / Looking south west from a point between Hindley Street and North Terrace. The cottage on the right is situated on the west side of what was later known as Register Place' (Another hand) 'Clarendon House apparently on east corner of Register Place' (Another hand) 'Copied from an old sketch in the possession of Mr. E.A.S. Thomas.'

KIRTON POINT: The ruins of the Hawson homestead where Frank Hawson was speared by hostile Aborigines in 1840; his remains were exhumed in 1911 and a memorial erected at Port Lincoln. Dr. W. Ramsay Smith, former City Coroner stands on the right, Dr. E. Kinmont stands in the cellar. According to Chrissie Myllika Houston, Frank Hawson was not speared at the house but at the shepherd's hut at Little Swamp (January 2011) [more complete copy at PRG 458/1/1/71].

North Terrace. From a sketch by J.C. Hailes, 1840. [Probably 1841. Hailes was the publisher only. Probably painted by E.A. Opie. See S.A. News Nov 15, 1841 p.54]. A key published in the 'Register' newspaper, 26 March 1910, page 6, identifies the buildings in the sketch, using a numbering system. The title is 'Key to a View of North Terrace'. Reproduction of a coloured sketch of the Supreme Court, probably made in the 1840s. The Court stood in Whitmore Square on acre 614 at the south east corner of the Square, and faced north. [See Kingston's map of Adelaide, 1842.]

Effie Marie Bancroft nee Wilton. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1840 and was an actor from childhood. In 1867 she married Squire Bancroft, also an actor. After establishing their own theatre company they raised the standard of theatrical production in the United Kingdom. Anne retired from the stage in 1886.

Colour lithograph of a port scene depicting Port Adelaide in 1840, and including the Caleb Angas (ship), (second ship from left) coming into dock, and the docking platforms, jetty and a whinch for loading ships. The artwork includes other ships and smaller row boats transporting passengers to and from the ships. There are various buildings to the centre and left side of the composition, indicating housing and general building around the Port area was well underway by this stage. The artwork also reflects the landscape, Adelaide hills and surrounding vegetation at the time.

Shows land sections in Section C, north of Port Noarlunga to Aldinga Bay, and eastwards to the Willunga hills part of the Mount Lofty Ranges, including the section 258 on which Willunga was settled. Also includes part of Section B on the north side, from O'Halloran Hill, and Section D on the south, to Sellicks Beach. Land sections with occupiers' names are coloured.

This chart was compiled from Colonel Light's survey with soundings by S. Hamilton, drawn by F.H. Burslem of the Survey Department and engraved by W. Moffitt, Sydney. Shows coast, river with soundings, and Torrens Island. Includes natural features. Although dated 1839, map and detailed navigation notes on right hand edge date this version at 1840. Title of map at bottom right does not have its supporting kangaroos and emu figures as in map 120/2. Scale 2 inches to 1 mile. (On reverse side is printed the 1839 map without the text on left hand edge, another copy of map 120/2 in this series.) [Double sided map; previously C155 & C156].

Plan showing 'the warehouses and sheds and the progressive state of wharfs' at Port Adelaide erected by the South Australian Company. A rudimentary wooden platform is shown on the end of the McLaren Wharf with the position of the lifting crane, a well and connecting bridge to the Government Reserve. An indication of the extent of vegetation surrounding an inlet in the area has been carefully executed by the artist. Signed by the architects Prescott and Hancock at right bottom corner, and dated January 5th 1840 at bottom left. 'No. 3' written at top left corner. Scale 1 & half inches to 50 feet. Ink and watercolour on paper, ink notation.
