Historical information

Provenance of artwork: Sir John Morphett and thence by descent to Derek Morphett.

John Morphett was born 4th May 1809 in London England a son of Nathaniel Morphett and Mary, née Gliddon, of Cummins, Ide, Devon. On 15 August 1838 Morphett married Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of J. H. Fisher. They had six daughters and five sons, four who survived him. John Morphett's legacy includes his name as a feature of South Australia's toponymy, including the suburbs of Morphettville, Morphett Vale, the street Morphett Street and the electoral district of Morphett.
