Provenance of artwork: Sir John Morphett and thence by descent to Derek Morphett.

Morphett was born 4th May 1809 in London England a son of Nathaniel Morphett and Mary, née Gliddon, of Cummins, Ide, Devon. On 15 August 1838 Morphett married Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of J. H. Fisher. Morphett died at his house, Cummins House, 7th November 1892 in Morphettville, Adelaide South Australia. Sir John Morphett was a benefactor, company director, explorer, immigration promoter, land owner and politician (Member of the Upper House His legacy includes his name as a feature of South Australia's toponymy, including the suburbs of Morphettville, Morphett Vale, the street Morphett Street and the electoral district of Morphett.
