General notes

Note attached to back of drawing by S.A. Archives archivist: 'Acre 19 (north east corner) / North Terrace East (west corner of Gawler Place). This building was still unfinished at the end of 1841, and from the financial difficulties of the S.A. School Sociey and the negotiations for leasing the building to the Government in 1842, it is doubtful whether it was ever used as a school house. The S.A. Almanack for 1841 (p. 101) states that in addition to the school on the Park Lands the Society has "a large and commodious school-room, now almost finished, in North Terrace, which will be occupied in a few weeks." The depression of 1841-43 probably frustrated this hope. The Colonial Secretary's letter book (Dec. 31, 1841, p. 284, and March 10, 1842, p. 486) refers to negotiations between the South Australian Company and the Government for leasing "the unfinished building on North Terrace erected as a school house". 2,200 pounds had been spent on it up to Dec. 1841. The Governor thought of using it as a court house and public offices, but other arrangements were made and the negotiations fell through. The building provided offices for the South Australian Company until the erection, on the same site, of Gawler Chambers, about 1913.'
