Summary

Paddle steamer 'Lancashire Lass' pulling a barge loaded with wool bales. This image has been reproduced as a postcard with the following on the verso 'P.S. "Lancashire Lass" and barge. The development of large sheep runs in the 1880s spurred the development of the barge as an efficient means of transporting bulky cargoes in a shallow draught vessel. In time, few boats travelled without a barge in tow. Here the 'Lancashire Lass' is towing a sizeable wool clip from Wilcannia down the Darling River. Photo Frank Tucker Collection'. This photo is part of the Sheahan Collection which consists of 114 views depicting river craft and two steam boat captains, bridges, and locks on the Murray River in South Australia.
