Hawkes Family photograph album

Album of the Hawkes Family, possibly containing photographs of Hawkes, Stebbing and Whittington families, and English relatives and siblings of Henry Hawkes and Francis William Hawkes, who married Mary Jane Whittington. The donor, Clifford Henry Hawkes, born 1898, indicated that the album belonged to his grandfather, Henry Hawkes. The album includes a one page family tree of Clifford Hawkes, compiled by the State Library, photographs of the original album (which has not been retained), several in memoriam cards (photos 56-59), and two Children's League certificates, belonging to Clifford Hawkes and Harold Hawkes. Most photographs are un-captioned, and a small selection have been digitised. The album is an interesting source of examples of carte-de visite and cabinet print portrait photography, along with one tintype photograph, by studios in Adelaide in the nineteenth century. Two group portraits of Aboriginal people, from Port Lincoln and from Kopperamanna are included (photographs 9 and 15). Photographs 67-70 relate to the Flinders Centenary 1902. Photograph album thought to have been compiled by Eileen Dubois Ive (later Mrs John Frederick Bagot) daughter of Charles William Ive and Agnes Dubois. The album contains photographs of many family members and friends, at 'Acton', Woodville and other places, showing fund raising and commemoration days during and after the first World War, such as Cheer Up Society work and marches, events such as Repatriation Day, French Red Cross Day and the opening of the Soldiers' War Memorial on North Terrace. Eileen married John Frederick Bagot in 1915 before his departure to France with the 13th Light Horse brigade and this album includes a number of photographs presumably taken by John Bagot, of fellow officers, places in Egypt, France and Palestine, and of the Camel Corps. The album contains five additional loose photographs, six postcards and one newspaper cutting regarding the sale of Stradbroke, the Magill home of Mr C. L. J. Dubois (maternal grandfather of Eileen Ive) and these have been placed at the end of the album. The postcards and newspaper clipping have not been digitised.

Arrival of the Duke of York, King William Street, just south of Grenfell Street. Crowds of people line the route and have taken advantage of the nearby windows. Flags and bunting are strung across King William Street. The Royal couple have travelled from Victoria to Adelaide by train. The Royal Party have a Police Escort, Military Escort provided by 23rd Light Horse. The route is lined by Returned Servicemen, Citizen Forces, Boy Scouts and school children.

John Thomas Collins, wife Margaret and sons Bruce, Walter, Percy and Thomas. (Some photographs taken in Melbourne.) Cover is ornate with metal decoration and brass clasp. The album has the inscription 'To Janet Kerr from her devoted friend William Sutherland as a Christmas Gift 25 December 1865'. The front page has 2 newspaper death notices, for Grace Kerr, daughter of Stair Kerr aged 64 years at Prospect (1917), and William Howard, husband of Eliza Howard, aged 68 years at 'Alsted Farm', Alma. The album bears the owner's name plate 'Mr J.T. Collins, Maitland'.

The album contains photographs relating primarily to the life of John Wilson Hursthouse (1913-1945) including family camping holidays to the South-East, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula between 1925-1930; schooling at Queen's School, North Adelaide, and Roseworthy Agricultural College, Boy Scouts, Army training at Kapunda Military camp, shearing at Middle Camp near Cowell and Elbow Hill (1934-1936); wheat harvesting at Gum Park, Yongala 1937; and training as an RAAF pilot at Parafield Aerodrome. The album includes a family portrait of John (Jack) with his parents Calvert Fearon Hursthouse and Lilian Ethel (nee Preshaw), and his siblings Helen Mary and Harold Richmond (Dick). Another photograph includes his son David as a child.

Marching soldiers and ambulances of the Medical Corps in a parade along King William Street, Adelaide, South Australia.This photo appeared in 'The Observer' newspaper, Saturday 27 April 1918, page 23, along with a description of the parade: 'Returned Soldiers' Building Fund Appeal. The appeal which is being made to the public in behalf of our returned sailors and soldiers for a central home or clubhouse was continued on Saturday afternoon, when a fine programme of sports was contested on the Juibilee Oval. The military authorities lent their hearty co-operation, with the result that one of the finest processions which has been seen in Adelaide for some time was witnessed by thousands of patriotic citizens, who thronged the main thoroughfares of the metropolis.' This particular photo was captioned 'The Men of the A.S.C. and A.M.C.'
