Currency Creek is located between the mouth of the Finniss River and Currency Creek. By 1885 Currency Creek had just 13 houses, 130 residents and a few public buildings. A church and school were built and later closed and the town Institute was built in 1913. Goolwa became the more popular town as Currency Creek went into decline

Currency Creek is located between the mouth of the Finniss River and Currency Creek. By 1885 Currency Creek had just 13 houses, 130 residents and a few public buildings. A church and school were built and later closed and the town Institute was built in 1913. Goolwa became the more popular town as Currency Creek went into decline. Currency Creek Inn was established in 1842 as a two storey Georgian style building but was only legally licensed from 1858

Nixon's Mill, Mount Barker

View of Nixon's Mill, Windmill Hill, Mount Barker. The area developed as a milling centre in the 1840's. Frederick R Nixon's wind-powered mill was completed in 1842. This mill was located on the brow of a hill overlooking the road between Hahndorf and Mount Barker. Nixon's Millground over half a million bushels of wheat in one season. Milling ceased in 1864 as it could no longer compete with steam mills. Frederick Robert Nixon(1817-1860) was an artist, draughtsman and surveyor. He arrived in South Australia in 1838 to take up his appointment with Colonel William Light's team of surveyors. In 1839 he was in charge of one of the teams surveying 15,000 acres in the Mount Barker District

Jetty, Second Valley

Second Valley, Jetty. Rugged coatline can be seen behind the jetty. The name is derived from being the next valley north of Rapid Bay, the initial camp on South Australian mainland of Colonel William Light.

Boyle Travers Finniss

Boyle Travers Finniss

[General description] This is an upper body portrait of Boyle Travers Finniss, in three quarter view. He wears a jacket, double breasted waitcoat and mutton chop whiskers. Mr. Finniss, a surveyor, arrived in South Australia on the Cygnet in 1836 and as Surveyor General William Light's assistant had a role in the setting out of Adelaide and surrounds, later founding the site for Darwin. He was South Australia's first Premier for a brief period.

Sir James Hurtle Fisher

Sir James Hurtle Fisher, barrister, Colonial Commissioner, Member of Upper House, lawyer. He held the important position of allotting public land in the Province. These proceeds financed emigration. He and his family arrived onboard the 'Buffalo' on 28th December 1836, together with the First Governor, Hindmarsh. He erected his hut and Land Office near the survey camp of Colonel William Light. Fisher was elected Mayor of Adelaide 1852-54, Member of the Legislative Council in 1853, Speaker 1855-56, President of the House in 1857-65. He was the first South Australian to be knighted.

Captain John Hart

Captain John Hart

Captain John Hart, mariner, merchant and parliamentarian. As a mariner he stood on the future site of Adelaide whilst sailing in the Gulf St Vincent. In 1835 whilst in England to buy a ship he talked with the South Australian Colonization Commission and Colonel William Light about sailing directions. He later ran a whaling station at Encounter Bay. He is remembered as a company director, flour miller, grazier, Member of both Upper and Lower Houses, mining investor, Premier, shipowner and whaler.

Sir John Morphett

Sir John Morphett was born in London, met Colonel William Light while working in Egypt. He became interested in investing in the South Australian Company and arrived in Adelaide in 1836. He and his family profited greatly from land transactions. He made his stand in the new colony becoming a Member of the Legislative Council, sharing an interest in horse racing, encouraging South Australia as a pastoral colony. He founded South Australia's first Freemason Lodge.

Sir John Morphett

Sir John Morphett, South Australian pioneer, landowner and politician met Colonel William Light and became interested in colonisation schemes for South Australia. With his brother George he set up an agency and offered his services as a land broker for the South Australia Company. He arrived in Adelaide on the "Cygnet" in 1836 and secured land for his family and clients. He was a Freemason and died at Cummins House at Novar Gardens

"Rapid" was a brig of 161 tons which brought William Light's surveying party of the new colony of South Australia. It left London on 1 May, 1836 and arrived at Kangaroo Island 17 August 1836.
