[General description] The statue of Colonel Light stands on its plinth and points towards Adelaide. Stonemason Mr. A.S. Tillett was contracted to move the statue and its plinth in May 1938. Palm trees and part of the tower of Carclew can be seen in the distance. [On back of photograph] 'Statue of Colonel William Light / Montefiore Hill / 27 July 1938 / The statue was placed on this site in May 1938 / It was formerly in the middle of King William Street, just south of the General Post Office / See B 7480'.

Light Memorial in Light Square, the earlier monument built from limestone, erected in 1844 on Colonel Light's grave, and designed by Sir George Strickland Kingston. The monument rapidly weathered byond repair and was demolished in 1904. A new Colonel Light memorial in Light Square was unveiled on 21 June 1905.

Letter written by William Light from 'Gulf St Vincent, Lat.34.43 Long. 138.3'. Dated 22 November 1836 and sent to George Jones, Light writes about the site he has chosen for the new settlement and includes a sketch of the locality along with an enthusiastic description of the area. [George Jones, recipient of the letter, was an artist who painted Light's portrait in 1823].

Colonel Light's cottage, Thebarton. The cottage situated on the corner of Cawthorne Street and Winwood Street was built for Colonel William Light. It was named after Theberton Hall in Suffolk where he lived as a child. A typographical error changed the name to Thebarton after 1840. Light grew vegetables in his garden but died there shortly after moving in, in 1839.This was only three years after reaching the colony. He suffered from TB, asthma and stress when he died at the age of 53. His housekeeper and mistress, Maria Gandy nursed him.

Chart of Port Adelaide, South Australia covering part of LeFevre's Peninsula and Torrens Island with land cover shown pictorially. Includes soundings for the coastal waters and Torrens River. Accompanying text is entitled 'Directions' and provides navigational directions to those sailing the Gulf of St. Vincent. The references under Remarks demonstrates the hopes of the Colony to provide anchorages for visiting vessels along the Torrens River and to provide access further up the River to the city of Adelaide. This chart was compiled from Colonel Light's survey with soundings by S. Hamilton, drawn by F.H. Burslem of the Survey Department and engraved by W. Moffitt, Sydney. Shows coast, river with soundings, and Torrens Island. Includes natural features. Dated 1839, but without detailed navigation notes that appear on 1840 version (map 120/3). Scale 2 inches to 1 mile.

Gouache painting of Colonel Light's cottage at Thebarton, showing the back of the house with arum lilies growing in the garden. Colonel William Light, the first surveyor-General of the province lived in this cottage and died there on 5 October, 1839. His dying wish was that he be regarded as the founder of Adelaide. The cottage was demolished in 1926.

King William Street, Adelaide, east side. The right side of the Clarence Hotel is 46 yards north of Pirie Street and its frontage is 15 yards. The Tivoli Theatre is advertised with decorative lights. Several men are posing in front of the building. The man in the light-coloured suit and hat, is the American Charles J Johnson, known as "The Black Diamond, champion Cakewalk Dancer". He is standing to one side of a poster advertising his appearance. A woman and two children are on the left. Signs for Walkerville Ales are on the hotel windows. For a view of the hotel taken in 1925, see B 2450. The Clarence Hotel started out as the Alma Shades in 1857, then in 1858, was known as the Adelaide Shades. It was re-named as the Clarence Hotel from 1863-1917 and then became the Majestic. It traded under that name until 1981 when it was demolished.
