Pencil on paper sketch of the wreck of the 'Gothenburg', comprising 9 portraits, probably copied from photographs, superimposed onto a background illustration of the sinking ship. There is a small inscription 'The Gothenburg' in fine white lettering on the vessel. The portraits represent 9 survivors including (numbered 1-9) Harris, Fitzgerald, Cleland, Thomas, Cockram, Kruger, Campbell, Hogan and Brazil. The portrait of Campbell is central to the work and considerably larger than the other portraits. It is assumed the work was commissioned by the Campbell family. The paper on which artwork is made is watermarked '1904'.

John Baptist Austin

John Baptist Austin

John Baptist Austin III, mining expert; son of Rev. John Baptist Austin was born at Hastings. The family left England in 1843 aboard the "Augustus" arriving in Adelaide in 1844. The family lived at Macclesfield, later the property was called "Lashbrooke". John Baptist Austin III became interested in mining. Together with his family he lived at Burnside from 1876 until his death in 1896. He is remembered as a mining expert, journalist and his lithograph entitled "Adelaide, South Australia, from west end of Hindley Street" printed in 1849.

William Kay

[General description] Upper body portrait of a bearded William Kay, in seven eighths view. He arrived in Adelaide in the 'Sea Queen' in 1850. After a variety of earlier occupations (including that of auctioneer) he became prominent in financial circles, and a Member of Parliament (in the House of Assembly for the seat of East Adelaide in 1875-1878) [On back of photograph] 'William Kay / M.P., Auctioneer'. According to a researcher, 'this is not a photo of William Kay and not 1885. It is a photo of William Henville Burford founder of W H Burford and Sons Soap and Candle Manufacturers. It is also not 1885 as William would have been 78 years in 1885. I would estimate it woud be about 1850. I am William Henville Burford's G G Granddaughter. The West Tce Cemetery also has a copy of this photo correctly named as William Henville Burford.'

Philip Levi

Philip Levi

Philip Levi, pioneer colonist arrived in South Australia in 1838 and quickly became a successful pastoralist, businessman and a founder of the Adelaide Club. He bought Vale House (now in Vale Park) which became the centre of Adelaide social life. He was a good raconteur, full of reminiscences and shrewd experiences. He always helped those in need. He had remarkable energy and financial ability. His properties eventually ran 70,000 sheep and 30,000 cattle. He remained unmarried and was buried in the Jewish section of West Terrace Cemetery.

Warburton Expedition

Warburton Expedition

Members of the Warburton Expedition: 1872-74. From left to right. Richard Egerton Warburton (the leader's son), Peter Egerton Warburton (leader), and J.W.Lewis. The personnel of the expedition comprised the above with two Afghan camel drivers, a cook (Dennis white), and an Aboriginal boy. Peter Egerton Warburton was born in England and arrived in Adelaide in 1853 where he became Commissioner of Police. He visited Lake Gardiner, Gawler Ranges, Lake Eyre, Streaky Bay. In 1872 his expedition sought to link South Australia with Western Australia. They crossed the Great Sandy Desert to become the first to cross the continent from the Centre to the West. This photograph was taken on their return to Adelaide. Peter Warburton attributed their survival to their Aboriginal companion Charley. Peter Warburton resided at Beaumont.

Martha Yeates

Martha Yeates

Martha Yeates, nee Barr, who was born in 1796 at Henwick Hall England, died in Adelaide in 1864 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery. Her brother was Marcus Barr a highly decorated military man who was killed in action in India by a cannonball. She married John Luther Yeates Esq. in 1820, when she was 24, and he was 54, and twice a widower with 5 children. They had six hildren with her, five of whom survived infancy. In 1838, aged 72, having been a solicitor in London, he took the family to Adelaide, landing on 22 January 1839, and died of dysentry on 26 April. She set up a primary school in Rundle Street, "for young ladies and young gentleman under nine", with herself as teacher. She sent her 14 year old son to work, and she married off her 16 year old daughter to a wealthy land developer twice her age, John Richardson. They had 18 children, of which 11 survived to adulthood, and lived to 88. Martha Yeates remarried in 1842 to William Fairbank, an accountant/clerk/debt collector, bu that went awry in 1851 when he got into debt, and a court ordered the furniture of their home on North Terrace to be auctioned off. A year later, she was widowed a second time when died on his way to Sydney. Her three sons left South Australia in 1863 to set up sheep farms on vast acreages in North Queensland, but were eventually beaten by the difficulties of life on the frontier. It was while they were away up north that Martha died, aged 68 [information supplied by researchers].

The Admella

The Admella

The Admella (photograph of painting). The 200 tonne steamship Admella departed for Melbourne from Port Adelaide on 5 August 1859 and foundered on Carpenters Reef, 20 miles west of Cape Northumberland, the following day. 89 people died and 24 survived the tragedy. She was named for her circuit route eg. Adelaide, Melbourne and Launceston = Ad-Mel-La. The disaster was one of the worst maritime disasters in Australian history

Rundle Street, north side looking west. Buildings seen on the north side include dentist's rooms at 146 Rundle Street, Bank of Adelaide Chambers, Metters Limited oven and kitchen range makers, William Kuhnel, Hoopers Studio and picture framers, Plough and Harrow Hotel (later Richmond Hotel,) cars and horse drawn carts can both be seen travelling along Rundle Street. On the southern side stands The Electricity House, Wedler's Umbrellas, Billiards Hall, Adelaide Arcade and others.

Rundle Street, south side looking east from a point about 30 yards west of Charles Street. The dome atop the entrance to Adelaide Arcade is prominent and the coat of Arms can also be seen. The Adelaide Arcade was opened by South Australian Governor William Robinson in 1885. In this photograph many people can be seen out shopping and going about their business. A trolley bus is moving east along the street and several horse drawn carriages can be seen. Electric power poles can be seen leading along Rundle Street.

King William Street, west side, right side of Bowman buildings is 28.5 yards south of Gilbert Place and frontage is 30 yards. The architect Jackman was articled to Adelaide architect Daniel Garlick of Daniel Garlick and Son in 1885. Jackman maintained the practice name of Garlick and Jackman and works included such significant Adelaide buildings as Bowman's Building, King William Street (1908).

The Adelaide Electric Supply Company Limited building was erected in 1936 on a site previously occupied by a corrugated iron structure. The building has been built in an art deco style.

Wakefield Street, south side, 21 September 1956, building on the left with the balcony is 62.5 yards west of Chancery Lane, frontage of building together with lane and Sieberts premises is 14 yards. For a view in 1958 see B 14053. Frank J Siebert Funeral Directors has been owned and operated by the Siebert family since 1867. Joseph B Siebert migrated from Germany to Adelaide in 1867. As a builder he is responsible for several Adelaide landmark buildings. He turned to making coffins for undertakers and later his son, Francis Joseph, opened a second funeral parlour in Wakefield Street

Brougham Place

Brougham Place

Brougham Place, north side, January 20th 1958, right side of building is 70 1/4 yards west of O'Connell Street and frontage is approximately 22 3/4 yards. Belmont was originally built as the North Adelaide Masonic and Public Hall Association. This building was opened in 1858. JB Neales who reached South Australia in 1838 was the first resident. The architect was Edmund Wright. In the 1860s it was the home of Dr John Woodforde who arrived with Colonel Light in 1836. The house was later bought in 1913 by Dr Harry Swift who lived here for 30 years. This photograph taken in 1958 shows the house, number 71 - 74 Brougham Place, with its classical facade with a sign saying "The Belmont". The style is described as "Roman Doric surmounted by a handcome cornice which rises over a pediment in the centre....the building is a handsome addition to North Adelaide"
