The iron ship 'Avalanche', 1160 tons, moored in an unidentified port. [iron ship, 1210 tons. ON70632, 214.6 x 36.0 x 21.1 Built 1874 (8) A. Hall and co. Aberdeen Owners: Savill and Temple, registered Southampton (operating for Shaw, Savill and Co in the New Zealand passenger trade). Lost in a collision in the English Channel shortly after sailing for Wellington, Sept. 10, 1877, with the loss of all but three people (loss variously given but about 90 persons) was in collision with the American ship 'Forest Queen'].

'Ilma' steel barquentine 318 tons [steel 3 mast brigantine, 345 gross, 318 net tons. ON102065, 145.8 x 27.05 x 11.1. Built 1885 Grangemouth DD and SB Co. Grangemouth. First registered GT Nicoll, purchased and sold 1904 to EJ Crisp, registered the vessel at Auckland (30/1903) for a syndicate who later formed "The Ship Ilma Ltd) at Gisborne. Sold in 1908 to Edward Pike and Co Ltd., timber millers etc. Sydney registered Sydney 43/1908. 1911 sold to JC Edwards, registered Hobart 6/1911 and in 1919 sold to Union SS Co. of NZ Ltd., who converted her into a hulk (I Farquhar, 'Union Fleet 1875-1975) she was converted to a hulk in Hobart by the Union Co. in 1911, which does not agree with the Customs register, but it seems the Union Co. acquired her c.1914 when she was being used as a store ship, and due to wartime shortage of shipping re-rigged her as a barque in 1917, then in 1919 converted to a hulk in Auckland, and fitted her out at a coal bunkering elevator in 1922 for Wellington. Scuttled in Cook Strait Feb. 11, 1937]

The iron ship 'Taranaki', 1126 tons, in Port Chalmers [iron ship, 1193 gross tons 1126 net tons. ON76749, 228.2 x 35.2 x 21.0. Built 1877 (1) R Duncan and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners James Galbraith, registered Glasgow, within a year or two owner was John Leslie. Before 1910 sold to Italian owners without change of name. A regular trader to New Zealand, operating under charter to the Shaw Savill organisation and usually thought of as one of their ships although always registered in the name of John Leslie apart from a year of two when it was in the name of James Galbraith, the senior partner of the Albion Line. Her last voyage to New Zealand appears to have been made in late 1899. Her usual port was Dunedin, although she made one visit to Wellington, Lyttelton and Timaru. See 'White Wings by Brett and 'Colonial Clippers' which mistakenly records that the ship was owned by Shaw Savill].

Presumed to have foundered with all hands (6). Captain was Richard Wood] ['Sir Henry' = wooden 2 mast brigantine, 95 tons, ON93566, 90.1 x 23.8 x 6.7. Built 1887 Thomas Davis, Terrigal, NSW for owners in Sydney, in 1903 transferred to Auckland. Her last owners were Joseph Goomes and Albert Jagger, registered Auckland. The vessel capsized and was lost with all hands (4) near East Island, East Cape, North Island, New Zealand July 17, 1906 while in command of Joseph Goomes]
