From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

This work depicts a rural scene at Willunga looking 'From Back of Rectory'. It was painted 30 November, 1904 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Wood chose to uniquely sign his work with a symbol consisting of a design based on his initials, rather than a signature as such. This work depicts specific details of the scene including three visible "fallow" labelled in pencil, indicating fertilised areas of ground. The work also features the homestead, nestled into the side of a hill slope. The artist has included a tiny pencil drawing of another structure in the distance, in the centre of the work. Wood has also included three head of cattle in the foreground to indicate scale and to represent the rural nature of the setting. The skyline is met by a bright blue coastline which is in contrast to the dryness of the landscape. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Willunga area in the early 1900's.

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

This work depicts a scene at Hahndorf. It was painted 16 April, 1910 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Instead of the unique signature symbol used in the work entitled 'From back of refectory' 1904, Wood has simply titled and dated this work. Wood attempts to create an ideal setting by limiting details to the bottom third section of the composition. A pencil line, where he has gauged the horizon, is still visible. This technique is used to intensify the scene. The eye is lead from the bottom left, where the fence begins to the centre of the path where two tiny figures stand. From there the path is followed to a low horizon line where eucalypts create a blue haze. In comparison to the two girls, the trees on either side of the path appear gigantic, which is indicative of the deeply wooded area around Hahndorf. The artist has consciously used techniques for creating distance and scale in this work and may be considered illustrative or contrived. However, the work is also a good example of what Hahndorf might have looked like in 1910, which is perhaps similar to how it appears now in some areas. The low horizon line extends to an atmosphere which further intensifies the tree canopy and the tiny figures below. Despite his amateur status as an artist, Wood has been able to illustrate a scene with conviction. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Hahndorf area in the early 1900's.

The man in the foreground is Captain Thomas Cowling. [On back of photograph} The text of the article reads: Shortly after Ryan's discovery in June 1861 on Captain Hughes' Warrilka run, overlooking Moonta Bay, the Yelta Mining Company was formed. Mr Frederick Wright, manager of the National Bank in Adelaide, was elected Chairman of Directors, and early in the following year rich ore was being sent to Wallaroo for shipment to the E. & A. Company's smelting works at Port Adelaide. Mr. J.L. Tuxford, of the North Terrace Implement Yard, a large shareholder, was sent up to supervise operations. His stay was short and Collingwood Kitto, a Victorian manager, accompanied by his brothers, Robert K. and Richard, took charge. He was succeeded by Captain Anthony and the part shown in the illustration was then opened up. Two years afterwards Captain Thomas Cowling took charge, and in February 1871 the first engine was set going and worked continuously until early in 1878, when operations ceased following a slump in the copper market. In 1885 the Bickford Syndicate bought out the company and the late Richard Cowling, who at that time was in charge of the Hamley, was put in command. In the illustration the figure in the foreground with the high hat is that of the late Captain Thomas Cowling, who died in January 1899. Perhaps some of the old Moonta Residents may recognise others who appear in the photograph, taken by Duryea'
