Historical information

William Steele was born in Adelaide on 23 February 1872 to James Steele and Elizabeth Beveridge Steele (nee Adamson). He was a prominent businessman and company director for 60 years, and was regarded as the 'father' of the superphosphate industry. He attended school at St Peter's College, became secretary of the Wallaroo Phosphate Co. Ltd. in 1889, and later secretary of the Wallaroo-Mount Lyell Fertilisers Ltd, then appointed general manager in 1918, managing director in 1934, and chairman of directors from 1945 until his death. He was a director of the SA Gas Company from 1935, and of the Bank of Adelaide from 1936. He was a member of the Superphosphate Industry Committee. He was also chairmain of directors of Fertiliser Sales Ltd., and of Nairne Pyrites Ltd. William Steele married Vivien Grace Stock in 1897 and they had three children: Violet Constance Beveridge (b.1902), William Michael (b.1908), Reginald Goodman (b.1911), He died in October 1952, aged 80 years, and buried at Goodwood, St George Church of England.
