Buildings from left side to the place marked with a "x" were demolished to permit continuation of Tavistock Street (now Frome Street). Shops seen in the photograph include a barber shop and Kim the Toyman.

[General description] Mrs. Reynolds' Ham shop is one of the ground floor shops in this two storey terrace building. It has a stone facade, arched upper floor windows and decorative brick quoins and dressings. Its balcony is trimmed with iron lace. South corner of Rundle Street and Union Street, Rundle Street frontage of shops is 10 yards. The store owned by T Howard sells imported crockery, glassware, bedding, carpets, holloware (metal sugar bowls, teaports etc.) and also performs the job of undertaker. Groups of men are standing outside the premises and samples of wares for sale lean up against the shop - bedsteads, gold pans, chairs, sofas, hearths, shovels and frying pans.

Rundle Street, south side, November 11th 1953. Right side of centre building with rounded windows is 40 yards east of Union Street. The frontage of centre building is 26.5 yards. For a view of building after alteration see B 14185. At the time of this photograph the centre building housed a butchers, hairdressers, fishing tackle shop, cafe, and a dry cleaners. To the east stood Charlicks Store and to the west stood the building established by AA Brice 1887

East End Market, Grenfell Street, north side, near side of market is 44 yards west of East Terrace. At the time of this photograph the market extended west only as far as 57 1/2 yards east of Union Street. Trader's names visible include R Briant potato merchant, The New Market Tailoring Emporium, J Timmins Cold Meat Store, Sandow Gray and Company Fruit Growers and Exporters, H Spencer and a cycle store. Many horses and carts are loading and unloading goods outside the East end Market.

[General description] A woman and small child walk past a new building with glass roof lights that connects the premises of Richard Spencer Carriage and Waggon Manufacturing Company and the Gardener's Supply stores. On the right is part of the East End Market building. Note the tram pole in the centre of Grenfell Street. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 96 / Grenfell Street, north side / June 25th 1928 / The building between the Spencer Company and the Gardener's Supply Stores was ereced in 1926-7. A billboard advertises a wresting match between Bill Sledge and George Harben, on Monday 27 May 1940. To the left is the Grenfell Street branch of the Weymouth Grain Store.

Grenfell Street, north side, 23rd February 1961, right side of building is 34 yards west of Union Street and frontage is 30 yards. The original East End Market was established in the 1860s by Richard Vaughan. In 1904 it became the Adelaide Fruit and Produce Exchange and spanned four city streets including the Grenfell Street entrance shown in this photograph. An inscription found on the Grenfell Street entrance reads " The Earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof" (Psalm 24.1).

Above the entrance stands a carved statue of a man breaking sticks across one knee. "Union is Strength' is written underneath. Selborne Hotel, Pirie Street, north side, November 25th 1935, right side of hotel is 36 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 16.5 yards. The Selborne Hotel was an early meeting place for the United Trades and Labor Council. On 13 June 1890 Mrs Milne, Mrs Reuin and Miss Vincent were welcomed as delegates representing the newly formed Working Women's Trades Union. For alterations made to the Selborne Hotel in 1936 see B 6944. At the time of this photograph the proprietor of the hotel was TF Dollard.
