He was considered the 'Father of Amateur Rowing' at Port Adelaide, was Captain and Stroke 1884-1890, President and Coach 1890-1894, and Stroke Championship Four 1884-1886 and 1889. Robert Cruickshank was also Secretary of the Port Adelaide Football Club 1881, a prominent yachtsman, on the committee of the Port Adelaide Racing Club, a city solicitor in Port Adelaide, and Mayor of St Peters 1906, and 1908 to 1910.

Lance Corporal Archibald Harold Dowsett

Before enlisting, Dowsett was an official trainer for the Port Adelaide Rowing Club and the Port Adelaide Football Club, and trained the 1937 winning King's Cup Crew. He was one of the many members of the Port Adelaide Rowing Club who served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War. Dowsett enlisted on 31 May 1940 in Adelaide, and at the time of his discharge in February 1945 he was posted with the HQ Guard Battalion.
