Foreshore and jetty at Beachport, South Australia
Part of the foreshore and a distant view of the jetty at Beachport, South Australia. The house was known as Rivoli House, and built around 1879 for Mr. A.S. Smith, who was the manager of the Adelaide Shipping Company. It was later owned by Mr. Edward French, a shipping agent, before it became the home of the Superintendent of the South Eastern Drainage Board when the Board purchased five acres of land, various outhouses and the house [see also at PRG 280/1/15/544].

A formal group of uniformed soldiers described by Searcy as 'reinforcements' for the World War I conflict. The location has been identified by a researcher as the Mitcham Camp, and has suggested that the group appears to be the 2 Army Medical Corps. The officer in the front row, fourth from left, is Renfrey Gershom Burnard, who enlisted 14/8/1916 and embarked for overseas on 19 February 1917, which puts the date of this photograph within that time frame. [A photo featuring some of the men appeared in 'The Chronicle', Saturday 13 January 1917, page 30 under the heading 'November reinforcements for the A.M.C.; another appeared in the same paper the following week (Saturday 27 January 1917, page 28) under the heading 'Men of the A.M.C.' The man in uniform on the left is Walter Leslie Stuart, second Commandant of Mitcham Camp; the soldier standing on the other side of the civilians is Lieutenant Arthur Francis Lindsary Harper, Adjutant of Mitcham Camp. [NOTE: This image is clearly of the same event as that shown in PRG 280/1/9/143. From a report in 'The Register', Wednesday 5 April 1916: 'A presentation of colours to the 16th Battalion, 3rd Light Horse, took place at the Mitcham Camp on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of Major Bushell (Acting Camp Commandant), Lieut. Harper (Camp Adjutant), Chaplain-Col. Metters and many other officers. the colours were presented by Mrs J. De Burgh and Miss Lines. They were handed by Mr G.A.W. Alexander to Lieuts. Denison and Stott, who received them and thanked the donors.']

The officer on the far side of the group (near the third row) is Robert Conroy Parrott (see also PRG 280/1/18/8 and B 23141); the location of the photo is probably Mitcham Camp (based on Parrott's career); and the date around 1915 (based on the fact he is still wearing his old pre-war 74th Militia hat and jacket).
