[General description] In this three-quarter length portrait Abraham Abrahams looks at the photographer over his steel-rimmed glasses. He wears a long double breasted coat, gloves and carries an umbrella. Bald on top, he has fluffy sideburns and mutton chop whiskers. A practicing Jew, he emigrated from Kent to South Australia becoming an Importer, Insurance Company manager, patron of the arts and philanthropist, being closely involved in the founding of the R.S.P.C.A. His sight started to fail in his senior years and he lived at the York Hotel for twenty years, a well-known and respected citizen. [On back of photograph] The photographer has an elaborate logo featuring a rising sun with the legend 'James R. Dobson $ Co / Temple of Light / Rundle Street / Adelaide /S.A. (A hand written note) 'Abraham Abrahams / A man of Kent / Born in Sheerness 7th August 1813'.

Caption reads 'Adelaide, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland & Hanover. From the original Picture in the possession of her Majesty'. Adelaide, Queen Consort of King William IV of England. She was born at Meiningen, Germany in 1792 and was named Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Duchess in Saxony. She married William in July 1818 when she 25 and he was 52. William had 10 illegitimate children. None of Adelaide's children survived infancy. Adelaide became Queen Consort when William acceded the throne but it was short lived as he died in 1837. Adelaide is remember for her charity and piety. She improved William's behaviour, he drank less and became more tactful.

George Aldridge

Daguerreotype portrait of George Aldridge who came to South Australia in 1847. A well known South Australian publican he was associated with the Majestic, Prince of Wales and Prince Alfred Hotels. In 1854 he was appointed a Lieutenant in the South Australian Volunteers. He married Sarah Jane Brown on 4 September 1856. George and Sarah were the grand parents of composer and pianist Percy Grainger.

[On back of photograph] 'Charles Buxton Anderson / Railways Commissioner' [Newspaper article attached to back of photograph] 'Mr. Charles Buxton Anderson, M. Inst. C.E., M.I.E., Australia (SA) / Railways Commissioner, is a son of the late Mr. John Anderson of Adelaide. He was born on August 19, 1879, at North Adelaide and was educated at the Glenelg College School and the School of Mines. In November of 1898 he joined the Engineeering Department of the South Australian Public Service, and was successively draughsman, surveyor, resident engineer for Railways, superintendent of Railways, acting chief engineer, and general superintendent of railways. He was appointed railways Commissioner in 1930 in succession to Mr. W.A. Webb and his management of this big public undertaking has been conspicuously successful'.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of George Fife Angas in three quarter view. He was a wealthy merchant, banker and (later) philanthropist who made a great contribution to the establishment of the colony of South Australia. He invested in the South Australian Company and in 1836 sent the Duke of York, Lady Mary Pelham and the John Pirie out to South Australia where a settlement was formed on Kangaroo Island. He arrived in South Australia in 1851, aquiring Lindsay Park at Angaston where he made substantial improvements to the property and lived out the rest of his life.

His painting 'Boulevard Montparnasse, Paris' was sold for 150 guineas to the National Gallery of South Australia. He won the Wynne prize for landscape three times.

[General description] A letter of appreciation to Thomas Atkinson Esq. J.P. from the Willunga, Aldinga, McLaren Vale and Noarlunga Agricultural and Horticultural Society, expressing thanks for his service as President of the Society. Dated July 6th, 1898, it features an oval shaped portrait of Mr. Atkinson, a pioneer of the district who was a Councillor, Magistrate and Member of Parliament from 1878-1887. He was an architect and builder who built the Bush Inn at Willunga.

[General description] A head and shoulders portrait of William Patrick Auld, explorer, vigneron and wine merchant. He accompanied John McDouall Stuart on the expedition which crossed the continent in 1861-62 and in 1864 was part of Boyle Finnis' Northern Territory expedition. The Aulds were instrumental in the push for legislation to prevent the entry into South Australia of Phylloxera vastatrix, the insect pest which had caused great damage to vines in Victoria.

Mr George Bates

George Bates, pioneer resident of Kangaroo Island was a sealer and trader. He was born in Cheapside, London. He reached Hobart Town as crew on the 'Commodore Hayes". He later joined a sealing vessel and absconded when they were moored off Kangaroo Island. Aboriginal women from the mainland showed the renegrades seal, kangaroo and wallaby skinning mthods so they were able to trade with passing ships. He told passing captains of his glimpses of Lake Alexandrina thus contributing to the growing interest of settlement in South Australia. He was honoured as an "Old Colonist" and later died in the Destitute Asylum in 1895.
