Summary

[General description] A letter of appreciation to Thomas Atkinson Esq. J.P. from the Willunga, Aldinga, McLaren Vale and Noarlunga Agricultural and Horticultural Society, expressing thanks for his service as President of the Society. Dated July 6th, 1898, it features an oval shaped portrait of Mr. Atkinson, a pioneer of the district who was a Councillor, Magistrate and Member of Parliament from 1878-1887. He was an architect and builder who built the Bush Inn at Willunga.

Historical information

Thomas Atkinson arrived from Snitterby, Lincolnshire, England with his three brothers William, Robert and Joseph and sisters Bridget and Susanna on the ship "Singapore" in 1839. They settled at Willunga South Australia and built the first hotel "The Bush Inn", a brickworks and a general store/bakery in High Street, Willunga.
