Lithographed portrait of Queen Adelaide, from the painting by Agustus Grahl. Engraved by S.W. Reynolds, engraver to Their Majesties. Caption reads 'Adelaide, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland & Hanover. From the original Picture in the possession of her Majesty'. Adelaide, Queen Consort of King William IV of England. She was born at Meiningen, Germany in 1792 and was named Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Duchess in Saxony. She married William in July 1818 when she 25 and he was 52. William had 10 illegitimate children. None of Adelaide's children survived infancy. Adelaide became Queen Consort when William acceded the throne but it was short lived as he died in 1837. Adelaide is remember for her charity and piety. She improved William's behaviour, he drank less and became more tactful.
