Portrait photograph of Alexander Wallace Sandford (1849-1905) sitting in a chair. He was a produce merchant and the senior partner of A. W. Sandford & Co. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1897-1902, and was the father of Sir James Wallace Sandford. The original photograph was presented to A. W. Sandford and Company "by the Buyers in Memory of the Founder of the Firm", and it is signed J. Good, Enlarger.

Thwaites was based in Kapunda in 1875, and the photograph was likely comissioned by the homestead owner.
