Historical information

After a donation of £10,000 from John Melrose, a prominent pastoralist from Ulooloo near Peterborough and a promise of funding from the state government, work began on the Melrose Laboratory, to the designs of Woods, Bagot, Jory and Laybourne Smith. The foundation stone was laid on 26 January 1928 and the building was completed in April 1929. The family of the late John Darling donated £10,000 for a laboratory for soils research which would be an extension of the Melrose building. The foundation stone of the Darling Wing was laid on 14 April 1930 and the laboratories were opened on 16 September 1930. John Mortlock and his mother Rosye Forsyth Mortlock donated £10,000 in memory of their younger brother and son, Ranson, for the construction of the Ranson Mortlock laboratory for research into soil erosion and the regeneration of pastures. Mrs Mortlock laid the foundation stone on 3 May 1937 and the building was opened on 26 April 1938. The Main Building is historically important as the physical development of Peter Waite's vision for an Agricultural Institute. It is significant architecturally as the work of Woods, Bagot, Jory and Laybourne Smith and as one of the few South Australian buildings in the Georgian Revival style.
