Digital copy of a portrait of Emily Elizabeth Davey, who arrived on the 'SS Austral' as one of the five servants travelling with the Buxton family. Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton took up the post as Governor in October 1895, bringing with him five servants: John Chilvers, aged 23 (first footman), John Fidgett, aged 20(?) (footman), Ellen Crowe, aged 68 (nurse), Lina Merlach, aged 44 (lady's maid) and Emily Davey, aged 28 (lady's maid?). Emily Elizabeth Davey was born in London in 1867; and returned to London on the 'Bungaree' on 2 August 1897, along with John Chilvers, whom she married on their arrival in England. The photo was taken during the time she was working for the Governor of Australia at Government House, Adelaide.

Family portrait, presumed to be the Davie family, standing outside their home, possibly in Stirling. If this is the Davie family, then possible names, left to right, are: Thomas Samuel, Henry Hardy, Caroline Davie (nee Brandis) seated, holding baby Caroline Latham, Samuel Davie, unknown, Anne Elizabeth, Emma Louise, Charlotte Eliza, and Miriam Sarah Ann. Handwritten on the back: 'X when I was 13 Margaret dear. Have a good laugh. Was I not prim', and X is marked under the girl second from the right, thought to be Charlotte Eliza Cameron writing to her granddaughter Margaret Phylis Cameron.

The woman at the front, right, is seated next to a pram with a baby lying inside. At the back of the group on the right is a boy seated on a horse, and on the far left is a young man standing next to a horse in harness. Written on back of postcard, addressed to Mrs J. Cameron, Cambridge Terrace, Unley: 'Dear Mother, Have only time for a P.C. this morning. Rain spoilt the [?] again, just my luck; only a few there but [?] more than at the last one as the expenses were not so heavy. Thank you very much for the prizes, they were just the thing, you couldn't have done better. The [?] first were won by a brother + sister Mr and Miss Critchley and the bookies. Lulu and Ralph Kakh. A lovely day today of course the 'day after' always is good. Love to Ray and plenty for yourself. Ken.' The postcard was written by Kenneth Cameron to his mother Charlotte Eliza Cameron (nee Davie) and sent from Lameroo, South Australia.
