Martha Yeates

Martha Yeates, nee Barr, who was born in 1796 at Henwick Hall England, died in Adelaide in 1864 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery. Her brother was Marcus Barr a highly decorated military man who was killed in action in India by a cannonball. She married John Luther Yeates Esq. in 1820, when she was 24, and he was 54, and twice a widower with 5 children. They had six hildren with her, five of whom survived infancy. In 1838, aged 72, having been a solicitor in London, he took the family to Adelaide, landing on 22 January 1839, and died of dysentry on 26 April. She set up a primary school in Rundle Street, "for young ladies and young gentleman under nine", with herself as teacher. She sent her 14 year old son to work, and she married off her 16 year old daughter to a wealthy land developer twice her age, John Richardson. They had 18 children, of which 11 survived to adulthood, and lived to 88. Martha Yeates remarried in 1842 to William Fairbank, an accountant/clerk/debt collector, bu that went awry in 1851 when he got into debt, and a court ordered the furniture of their home on North Terrace to be auctioned off. A year later, she was widowed a second time when died on his way to Sydney. Her three sons left South Australia in 1863 to set up sheep farms on vast acreages in North Queensland, but were eventually beaten by the difficulties of life on the frontier. It was while they were away up north that Martha died, aged 68 [information supplied by researchers].

Gavin David Young, philosopher arrived in South Australia in 1848 not long after the founding of the colony. He became prominent in business circles including mining, banking, and shipping. He is remembered by a bequest made by his daughter Jessie Frances Raven to promote, advance, teach and diffuse the study of philosophy. The lectures began in 1956.

He was prominent in the affairs of the Adelaide Club. He is remembered as 'the quiet man who went on with the job'.

Amandus Heinrich Christian Zietz was born at Hamburg June 13,1840 and arrived in South Australia in 1883. Became Assistant Direrctor of the South Australian Museum from 1900-1910. He died August 2, 1921. Together with his son Frederick Robert Zietz he worked on preserving bones from a diprotodon skeleton which is the largest known marsupial to have lived.

Healey, T. Pasfield, H. Kyte (?), E.Elliott. One of the players may also be R. Sillett. Peryman was a player for East Melbourne Cricket Club, and one time secretary of the Richmond Cricket Club. A portrait of him is found in the 'History of the East Melbourne Cricket Club', published in 1910. He was among founders of that club (information supplied by a researcher).

Group portrait of Captains George Grundy, Edward Creamer, and F. H. C. Kruse, Masters of River Murray paddle steamers. Edward Creamer or Creemer, later standardised as Cremer, first came to Australia as a sailor on a ship carrying convicts to Tasmania in the 1820s. He worked on a number of whaling ships before joining a land-based crew at Encounter Bay by 1848. He lived at Goolwa, where he married Mary Driscoll in 1850 and had a large family. He was appointed as the first signalman at the Murray Mouth in 1857, but soon returned to working as a pilot, fisherman and captain of the schooner Water Lily, carrying cargo from ports around the lakes to Goolwa. Captain Edward Cremer was appointed the first signalman when the railway was established between Adelaide and Goolwa. He was found dead in his boat after suffering a heart attack while carrying a load of salt. He was 75 years old when he died in 1892 and had been a colonist for 50 years. Captain FHC Kruse was born 25th May, 1823 in Germany and went to sea at 14 years of age. He arrived in Adelaide in 1854, settled in Milang and purchased boats to begin trading on the lakes and Cooroong. Although retired at 80 he remained active in the Milang Regattas.
