A composite of seven portraits of men who superintended the construction of the telegraph line from Port Lincoln via Eucla to Albany published in the Observer newspaper 4 December 1909, page 28. They are (2) John Knuckey, (3) McMinn, (4) Alfred Woods, (5) Frank Marchant (6) and (7) Carey brothers of Western Australia. (One of Richard Knuckey has been removed. See B 7232).

A double portrait of John Ottaway, a Port Adelaide postman, delivering a letter to himself. The photograph is an example of the early use of multiple-exposure photography. A note on the back of the photograph states "this is a fake photo; each of the two figures is that of John Ottaway, postman at Port Adelaide. He is shown delivering and receiving a letter. Period about 1866. Postman's costume: red coat, of good cloth, gilt buttons, black trousers, with red stripe, black silk hat with gold band". Another copy of the photograph is held at SRG 4/108/2/16.

[General description] This portrait of an unknown bearded man shows him wearing the uniform of the Adelaide Rifles and holding his musical instrument, possibly a clarinet. The uniform is of a light colour, the jacket being buttoned up to the neck and worn with a leather belt. The sleeves are decorated with braid. He is wearing a kepi. [On back of photograph] ' Bandsman of the Adelaide Rifles / early eighteen sixties'.

Mounted soldiers of the South Australian Light Horse Regiment on parade for a Colour Presentation ceremony at Morphettville racecourse, South Australia. See B 10302 for a photo taken at almost the same time. This photo appeared in 'The Advertiser' Monday 21 September 1914, page 9: 'The above picture, taken from an elevated position, shows the 3rd Light Horse Regiment drawn up in line of troop on the Morphettville Racecourse after the Governor had presented the colours. Lieutenant-Colonel Rowell, I.O.C. shown in the immediate foreground with Major Fulton who is second in command. A little to the left behind the O.C. the Transport and Machine Gun Sections attached to the Regiment are depicted on the right and left flank of the troops'. See PRG 280/1/29/73 for another photo taken just seconds apart from this one.

Finniss was appointed first Government Resident in the Northern Territory and tasked with establishing the capital city at a site suitable for a town and a port with good accessibility to the hinterland. At this stage Finniss was 57 with only 10 years experience in the army and only 4 years as a surveyor. Surveyor John Manton was second in command of a complement of 40 men. Upon arrival they proclaimed a colony around a barrel of beer in a tent

Sprinkler Car. Messers Pengelley and Co. secured the contracts from the Tramways Trust to make 50 cars along with three special water sprinkler cars to run over the tramway rails, each carrying a 2000 gallon tank. The first sprinkler car was to be supplied in January 1910. See article 'New cars and water sprinklers' in 'The Register', Tuesday 19 October 1909, page 5, for more details. This photograph may be the 'portrait' of the first new sprinkler car before it begun operating in January 1910, and was assigned the number S-1.
