Men of South Australian telegraph
A composite of seven portraits of men who superintended the construction of the telegraph line from Port Lincoln via Eucla to Albany published in the Observer newspaper 4 December 1909, page 28. They are (2) John Knuckey, (3) McMinn, (4) Alfred Woods, (5) Frank Marchant (6) and (7) Carey brothers of Western Australia. (One of Richard Knuckey has been removed. See B 7232).


John Knuckey
Portrait of John Knuckey, one in a composite of 'Men of South Australia'. John Randall Knuckey was born at Stithians, Cornwall, 29 March 1845 to Richard Knuckey and Persis Reed. He married Louisa Calnan and they had 8 children. At the time of his death at Kensington Park, South Australia on 19 July 1890 he was Inspector of Telegraph and Telephone Lines. John also worked on the Overland and Fowler's Bay telegraph lines.


William McMinn

Alfred Thomas Woods
Portrait of Alfred Thomas Woods, one in a composite of 'Men of South Australia'. Reserch by a previous archivist reads: 'More like Sir E.T.Smith than anyone else. It has been suggested that this is W.B.Rousevell, V.L.Solomon or J.A.G.Little. It does not seem positively to be any of these'.


Frank Marchant
Portrait of Frank Marchant who participated in the construction of the telegraph line to Western Australia in the 1870s.
