Jane Sanders, daughter of George Sanders and Ann Smurthwaite. Keeper of her father's 1840s journal about the settlement of his family in the Echunga Creek area of South Australia. George Sara

George Sara

George Sara of Willunga was an enterprising businessman. Within a decade of his arrival from Cornwall he had established a building firm. He was responsible for many of the buildings in Willunga. In the 1860's the firm undertook government contracts and built the railway viaduct over Currency Creek and the Police Station at Clarendon among other projects. George was a Justice of the Peace and Chairman of the Willunga District Council. He died aged 100

Alfred Thomas Saunders was born at Queenstown in 1854 and is remembered as an amateur historian recording aspects of South Australian history. During 1913-1915 he lived at "Omagh" in Hill Street, North Adelaide. After working in Perth he returned to Adelaide in 1928.

Edwin Sawtell, first watchmaker and optician in South Australia. He was the father of Alfred E Sawtell. Edwin was born in Bristol in 1817 and arrived in Port Adelaide in 1853.

Edwin Sawtell is depicted in the first photograph and the second shows the surveyor's transit instrument used for determining exact time of South Australia before the establishment of the Observatory in 1860 and the time ball tower at Semaphore in 1875. Greenwich Mean Time was relayed to vessels moored in the Port's inner harbour so the shipboard chronometers could be rated and corrected. This determined longitude and aided navigation. Sawtell also provided daily barometric and temperature data to local newspapers.

The image could be Johann Peter Leonard "Len" Schinckel, who was born 24 October 1869 at Mount Gambier to Johann Jurgen Schinckel (from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany,) and his wife Charlotte Elenora Margretha BAGONY. They married 27 August 1867 at O.B. Flat near Mount Gambier. J.P.L. Schinckel's father Johann Jurgen Schinckel was an uncle of Simon Schinckel. Simon Schinckel was at one time storekeeper of Rendelsham.
