Historical information

Carl was born in the Hartz Mountains, Clausthal, (now reportedly called Clausthal-Zimmerman), Germany on 23 January, 1825. Throughout his life Carl spent time as a miner, builder, bus company owner, and a gentleman in 1869. According to stories passed down through the family, Carl was "lucky" in his mining endeavours, and always maintained he would not marry until he was wealthy enough to keep a maid for his wife. Carl married Emma Winzor (daughter of Joh Winzor of 'Deal Court'), and they had one child, Ruby Emma Schunke. She was born to them later in life in 1879, however Ruby and her husband Albert Ernest Greenlees had five children. Carl supplied the first omnibus to Glen Osmond and rode it into town behind a brass band for its first grand appearance.
