Colonel Llandaff Brisbane Mathews VD died in 1904 aged 72. It is possible that he was a colonel in the colonial garrison and aide-de-camp to three South Australian governors. In 1901 he received a decoration "at the hands of" the Duke of Cornwall, now the Prince of Wales. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officer's Decoration, post nominal letters VD, was established in 1889 as recognition for long and meritorious service as a part-time commissioned officer in any of the organised military forces of the British Colonies

William Henry Maturin (1814-1889) arrived in South Australia on the brigantine Elizabeth Buckham in 1843. Worked as Private Secretary to Sir Henry E Fox Young. Became Auditor General, promoted to Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor in 1851. In 1857 was appointed Chief Commissioner of the Adelaide Waterworks Commission, then appointed Land Titles Commissioner.

Richard Thelwell Maurice was an explorer from South Australia who made 8 or 9 expeditions between 1897 and 1898 to the Nullarbor Plain and Great Victorian Desert noting the position of Aboriginal water holes. Later he explored the Rawlinson Ranges in Western Australia, Wyndham in the north west of Australia. He established himself as a kangaroo hunter on the Nullarbor Plain

George Mayo was born in England and arrived in South Australia on board the "Lady Emma" in 1837. He later returned from England again and took up a position at the Adelaide Hospital . He was later made the Hon. Consulting Surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital. He was an enthusiastic member of the Voluntary Defence Force and a keen cyclist as well as one of the original trustees of Trinity Church.

He was father of noted women's health pioneer Dr Helen Mary Mayo, and noted psychologist George Elton Mayo. Another son, Sir Herbert Mayo was a noted jurist.

Israel Mazey - old colonist who arrived in South Australia on the sailing vessel the "Duke of York" in 1836. A note on the back of the photograph dated 1894 suggests that Israel Mazey was one of the last persons still living who arrived on the "Duke of York" along with the daughter of Mrs Beare who had 10 children, 50 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren. Also mentioned are Mr WL Beare of Glenelg and Mr O Powell of Walkerville. Israel Mazey was born approximately in 1817 in Berkshire, England and died June 26, 1894 at Alberton. He was 20 years old when he began working to establish a whaling station on Kangaroo Island. He joined the "Duke of York" when it was anchored off the Isle of Wight. Later he worked as a blacksmith on Kangaroo Island. He married Hannah Woolman in 1843 and they produced 12 children and lived in King Street in Alberton.

Charles James Melrose, pilot with his aircraft. A researcher has added : The aircraft is his Heston Phoenix painted green and silver. It also had 'South Australian Centenary 1936' painted on it. Also his uncle's name - who it is believed sponsored it. A note on the back of the photograph states "Mr CJ Melrose and his aeroplane in which he is flying to Adalaide, South Australia, early in April, to attend the South Australian Centenary Celebrations. Mr Melrose desires to take three passengers and enquiries regarding costs etc. should be addressed to the Agent General and Trade Commissioner for South Australia, British Industries House, Marble Arch, W1"

Johann Menge, a painting by WA Cawthorne of the bald headed Johann Menge in 'his usual attitude when teaching'. Mengle is known as 'the father of South Australia's mineralogy. He was a geologist and linguist and was an early explorer of the new colony, especially the Barossa Valley. He was born 4th January 1788 in Germany and died 1852. See 'Register' 9/8/16.
