Railway Station, Peterborough

Railway Station at Peterborough. This was originally opened in 1880 when a narrow gauge line opened from Port Pirie to the west. In 1881 a line arrived from Terowie. The town sat at the intersection of the East-West railway and the North-South railway. Originally named Petersburg the name was changed to Peterborough in 1917 due to anti-German sentiment during World War I. St Andrews Church of England

St. Andrews Church of England, Redhill (photograph identified by Mrs Calton Davis who attended it for several years). The church was built in 1880 at Red Hill in the mid north of South Australia. According to a researcher, the church was actually built in 1881, having been designed by Redhill bank manager, William Kingsnorth Mallyon. Mallyon had no formal training in architecture, draughtsmanship or building. He went on to design numerous churches, mostly for the Diocese of Willochra. Many are extant including the cathedral at Port Pirie. Redhill's building is in private ownership and is in excellent condition.

Terowie Railway Station

Terowie Railway Station

Terowie railway station. Terowie was founded as a private venture by John A Mitchell who built a public house on the main road near the Inkermann Mine. The Railway Station was opened in 1880 when the line to Adelaide was completed. The Trans-Australian Railway opened in 1917 and business escalated until its closure in 1937 when the Adelaide to "Redhill line was extended to Port Pirie. Whilst changing trains at Terowie General MacArthur said "I came out of Bataan and I shall return".

Construction of the Whyalla Jetty began in 1901. The first shipment of iron ore was transported to the Port Pirie smelters by barge in 1903.

Yunta Hotel

[General description] This low single storey hotel building with a verandah has decorative quoins around its door and windows and a corrugated iron roof. In its early days it would have catered for the influx of travellers from 1887 after the discovery of gold at the nearby diggings at Teetulpa and Waukaringa which attracted more than 5,000 miners. [On back of photograph] 'Yunta Hotel / Erected by W. Knapman of Port Pirie / 1887 / Taken askew as hotel is on level ground'.

Mr and Mrs E.J. Haddrick of Port Pirie. According to a researcher, this is Edward James Haddrick son of Thomas James Haddrick - he arrived as a one year old on the barque 'Resource' on October 7, 1838 with his parents and older siblings. Part of the Haddrick family were very active in cricket in Glenelg. The lady in the photo is most likely Emily [nee Hawker].

Albert James Hannan was born at Port Pirie and after a brilliant scholastic career was admitted to the Bar in 1913. He became Crown Solicitor in 1927 and held this position for 25 years and was also a lecturer at Adelaide University.

Richard John Loveday. Note on the back of the photograph says "In the article on Port Pirie which appeared in yesterday's Advertiser, Lance Corporal Loveday, who compiled a valuable map in 1853 is spoken of as having belonged to the Royal Marines. He was a member of the detachment of sappers and miners, an altogether different branch of the service, who occupied cottages on the bank of the Torrens near the City Bridge which were demolished not long ago". (no date given) Loveday's map showed a plan of the County of Stanley and part of the County of Burra. This area is in the Mid North of the State of South Australia.

Emily Amelia Winslet, nee Daniel, born 22 February 1883 at Port Pirie, married Herbert Winslet 27 December 1906. She died 1945 at Rosewater.

In the one on the left the driver (or fireman) can be seen behind the tender. On the right is one of the 620 class Pacific type locomotives that ran between Adelaide and Port Pirie from 1937. Mail coach at Mylor, said to have been the last coach on this run. Men, women and children are "outside" passengers on the coach. The coach has Graves Hill and GR (George Rex = King George) written on the side. Graves Hill was close to Napperby near Port Pirie

GENERAL: A close up view of a "Spark" motor car, with two men and a woman. According to a researcher, this car was owned by Ralph Vaughan Berriman. It was bought October 1924, registration 36912, residing in Port Pirie. The man in the photo beside the car is George Berriman.

The corner shop and greengrocers is owned by M Bolkus. Mr Bolkus arrived in South Australia with his wife and five year old son in 1922. After a stint in Port Pirie, he moved to Adelaide in the 1930s and started his greengrocery business next to the Cumberland Arms Hotel in Waymouth Street. A young Nick Bolkus,Labour politician, born in 1950, grew up in the south west of Adelaide in a multi cultural setting.

The "Forthbank" was a barque of 1332 tons which visited Port Pirie in 1895. Whilst in South Australian waters she became dismasted and new sails were ordered from London. She was placed on Fletcher's Slip while two of her masts were mended
