Summary

Iron Ore Quarry, near Gladstone. L-R: William Mantel Hicks; Thomas Rayner Hicks; J. Tobin; W.Tobin; Charles Rayner Hicks; young boy possibly the son of C.R. Hicks; Alfred James Oke. The Hicks Bros. worked the quarry for about 20 years, then from 1895-1903 with B.H.P. under an agreement.

Historical information

Additional information supplied by a researcher: William Mantle, Charles Rayner & Thomas Rayner Hicks trading as HICKS Bros owned a quarry with huge deposits of high grade iron ore which they supplied to BHP between 1900 &1903. The quarry closed down due to BHP commencing to mine at Iron Knob. When the Quarry worked, a private rail line & siding was built especially for loading of the flux going to BHP smelters at Port Pirie. Railway lines ran from the quarry to the siding which was called 'Yangya' after the hundred of Yangya. There is some dispute about the name. Later listings call it the 'Siberia siding', established specifically to serve the Siberia Flux Quarry (Hick's quarry). The siding was approximately 4 miles out from Gladstone & there were railway cottages there. Remains of these were still there in the 1940's.
