Material collected during the historic American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land (AASEAL), Northern Territory. Papers include multiple field notes, diaries, correspondence, accounts, original artworks, maps and documentary photographs including additional text with descriptions, meanings and diagrams, newspaper articles, typescript records of Aboriginal songs, sound recordings and other sundries. Scrapbook album relating to the activities of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton (Governor of SA from 1895-1898) and his family. It contains 98 original photos, as well as newspaper cuttings, watercolour paintings and letters. Possibly compiled by Lady Buxton. The majority are identified or annotated in the compiler's hand, sometimes using terminology that is today considered inappropriate.

Also contains diaries of Lucy Lockett Ayers. Includes literary manuscripts. Additional papers comprise his personal files on education, South Australian Gas Company (when he was chairman), his parliamentary career in the Legislative Council, papers relating to wheat yields and land leases, and history of foundation of the state, finance and banking, and miscellaneous papers about agricultural and Crown Land /nationalization of land. Correspondents include R.C. Baker, Robert Barr Smith, W.H. Bundey, G.W. Goyder, H.R. Hancock, John Lewis, Dr. S. Magarey, Solomon Moody, Sir Charles Todd, Samuel Tomkinson and S.J. Way.
