Police Station, Gumeracha, 16 July 1933. The Police Station was built in 1856 and is the oldest police building being used for its original use. It was one of two police stations using the same design, the other being Riverton which has since been demolished.

LAKE LITTRA: Police camp at Lake Littra on the border of N.S.W. and South Australia. The border was closed in 1919 to prevent the transfer of influenza from the eastern states. A grandson of the policeman Ridge who is sitting in this photograph says that he was E. P. Ridge, not Charles Ridge. The police officer standing on the right with a cigarette in his mouth is Mounted Constable Patrick ('Paddy') Cashion (1895-1952). Patrick Cashion was a teacher before he joined the South Australian police force in 1917. He was born in Nackara in 1895 and moved to New South Wales in 1920. The seated police officer in the middle is Constable Edward Patrick Ridge (1889- 1968). The border crossing near Lake Littra was on the mail run between Renmark, South Australia, and Wentworth, New South Wales.

[General description] Situated in desert country, this stone cottage is surrounded by post, rail and wire fencing. Trellising which is supporting climbing plants has been attached to the verandah. An early flat bed truck is parked out the front under a hand painted sign which bears the words: Arltunga Police Station. The original police station was built when a mining site was established following a discovery of gold in 1887. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the Chronicle, May 15, 1926.' Police Station, marking the site of the birthplace of the town which is the oldest in the Flinders Ranges. When Melrose Police Station was established in 1948 it was the base for the largest police district in the world. A constable, two troopers and an Aboriginal tracker were responsible for an area that stretched up to the Timor Sea in the north of Australia.

Police Station at Borroloola which was once a major port and drovers camp at the oldest surviving example of a Northern Territory outpost station. The police station was constructed in 1886 when Borroloola was a significent riverport. The property was a police station for fifty years before it became a patrol officer's residence.

Police Station, Roper River. In 1885 it is recorded that Corporal Power was returning to Mount McMinn and this is thought to be the first mention of police near Roper River. The police station was washed away in subsequent floods and rebuilt over time adding further extensions. The photograph shows a sturdy single storey building with an iron roof standing behind a fenced yard. Further buildings can be seen at the back of the station.

Motorized Police Patrols in 1938 showing the rider's supervisors sitting in the sidecars. The first uniform motor traffic police were seen in South Australia from 1931. The motorcycles are Ariels which were also used by the police in Victoria. They were made in Birmingham.

Mounted Police Barracks, showing the old Armoury (at the rear of the South Australian Museum). The stairway in front of the Armoury was removed July-August, 1958.The Armoury and Inspector's residences, although built for the Police Force became part of military history when contingents left from here for the Boer War. The mounted police vacated the premises in 1921 and the rooms were used by the Teacher's Training College and the Children's Library.
