Photographs from 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' publication
Photographs collected and taken for a conservation study of older residential buildings and hotels in Adelaide city (not North Adelaide) in 1976-1977, initiated by the Adelaide Residents' Society Inc., which were later used in their 1978 publication 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' edited by Colin Bond and Hamish Ramsay (Rigby Limited). The names of the photographers are not specified, but the following people were involved: Bob Ramsay, Michael Brock, Peter Kelly and Peter O'Grady. (Negatives of their photographs comprise series 4-6 of this group, and may include images from this series.) Some of the early views of buildings have been copied from State Library images (denoted in captions by 'SLSA'). See 'Contents' in 'More info' for details. (The City Acre number or exact location is not specified). Three images not listed in the 'Contents' but included in the book are: (98) Part of Queen Elizabeth I's proclamation of 1560 'agaynst breakyng or defacing of Monuments'; (99) Elevation drawing of St Paul's Cathedral, London by Christopher Wren; (100) Kirribilli House, Sydney.

Rundle Street, Adelaide
[General description] Busy Rundle Street scene showing pedestrians walking past the Wendt's building which is undergoing alterations. Wendt's Jewellers first moved from Pirie to Rundle Street in 1852 and had various premises in the vicinity.The business occupied this building since December, 1904. On the right part of Judell's dress shop can be seen. [On back of photograph] 'Wendt's Jewellers in Rundle Street / April 1965 / Left side is 34 yards east of Gawler Place / Frontage is 7.5 yards'

Waymouth Street, south side, 22nd March 1963, left side of shops is 21 yards west of Ranelagh Street and frontage of the block of shops is 18 yards. The corner shop and greengrocers is owned by M Bolkus. Mr Bolkus arrived in South Australia with his wife and five year old son in 1922. After a stint in Port Pirie, he moved to Adelaide in the 1930s and started his greengrocery business next to the Cumberland Arms Hotel in Waymouth Street. A young Nick Bolkus,Labour politician, born in 1950, grew up in the south west of Adelaide in a multi cultural setting.

Adelaide

The view shows empty paddocks with washing lines billowing in the wind on the acres between Grenfell Street and Pirie Street. The spire of the Evangelical Lutheran Bethlehem Church in Flinders Street can be seen to the right of the photograph. A researcher suggests that the buildings are the Union Bank of Australia, then the manse, side of Wesleyan Methodist Church and that the spire is St. Andrews.

Some of the images relate to interior scenes of the former South Australian Hotel on North Terrace (see note re Advertiser article in 1984). Stock Exchange Members
Members of Stock Exchange of Adelaide approximately 1900. The Stock Exchange of Adelaide was formed in 1887. It moved from King William Street to a building on a block off Pirie Street and near McHenry Street in 1900.


East Terrace
East Terrace, Adelaide Electric Supply Company's Power Station, looking north west from Hutt Street. Large towers, chimneys mark the landscape. A covered cart and a car are negotiating the corner of Pirie Street as it turns into East Terrace, then into Hutt Street. The Power Station was built at a cost of 8650 pounds and was opened in 1901.


King William Street, Adelaide
King William Street, Adelaide, east side, between Pirie and Grenfell Streets. In the centre is the Clarence Hotel, and to the right is the Wesleyan Book Depot. Horses and buggies stand at the roadside.
