A large group of Australian military officers, described as the instructional staff of the Federal City Forces; most names not known. The following have been identified in the front row: Colonel Goghill second from left (see also PRG 280/1/8/436]; Connor third from right; F.M. Lorenzo 8th from right; Colonel Dean 9th from right; Colonel F.J.D. Darvall 10th from right; and T. Hancock 11th from right. The man fifth from right also appears in PRG 280/1/42/114 and the man 6th from right also appears in PRG 280/1/39/182. A researcher has suggested that the small group that appears in PRG 280/1/42/114 and this photo appear to have been taken at the same time at the Jubilee (ie Exhibition) Oval during the later years of WWI. It is possible that the small group is the local staff and the large includes staff from HQ at Keswick.

Kay (6th person across, back row), V.Y. Richardson and O.B. Beatty (4th and 5th players across, middle row), ? Bailey (umpire) and G.F. King (front row). Percy Crowley is 3rd from left in the front row. Another researcher suggests that this photo is the civil service team that played a combined Banks team. An annual game was held yearly from the 1880's up to World War 2. There are Sturt players in the photo. Another researcher provided the following information: A copy of this photograph appears in 'The Critic' of 4 August 1920 and is captioned Public Service Football Team. The 'Register' of 28 July 1920 gives the names of the team selected to play against the Combined Banks team: O.B. Beatty, L.P. Jervis, P. Crowley, F.C. Curnow, F.J. McNally, L.R. Davies, H.H. Dixon, H.B. Groves, J.A. Hansen, J.L.R. Kay, J.W. Wainwright, W.J. Keane, G.F. King, V.Y. Richardson, R.N. Sanders, B.E. Schumacher, D.C. Sharp, F.C. Shearer (emergencies) C. Groves, G. Murray.

The appeal which is being made to the public in behalf of our returned sailors and soldiers for a central home or clubhouse was continued on Saturday afternoon, when a fine programme of sports was contested on the Juibilee Oval. The military authorities lent their hearty co-operation, with the result that one of the finest processions which has been seen in Adelaide for some time was witnessed by thousands of patriotic citizens, who thronged the main thoroughfares of the metropolis.' This particular photo was captioned 'The infantry marching past th saluting base at the Town Hall. His Excellency the Governor (Sir Henry Galway) is seen taking the salute.'

The locomotive is a Baldwin and the barge is either the 60 foot or the 90 foot Derrick boat. Both were used during the construction of Lock 1 at Blanchetown. Additional information supplied by a researcher: This is the 90 foot derrick boat, evident by the length of the jib or boom at the bow or front of the vessel. The 60 foot derrick boat had a much shorter jib.
