Summary

Soldiers marching in a military parade past a saluting base in front of the Town Hall, Adelaide where Sir Henry Galway, Governor of South Australia takes the salute; two men with collecting boxes are in the foreground. This photo appeared in 'The Observer' newspaper, Saturday 27 April 1918, page 23, along with a description of the parade: 'Returned Soldiers' Building Fund Appeal. The appeal which is being made to the public in behalf of our returned sailors and soldiers for a central home or clubhouse was continued on Saturday afternoon, when a fine programme of sports was contested on the Juibilee Oval. The military authorities lent their hearty co-operation, with the result that one of the finest processions which has been seen in Adelaide for some time was witnessed by thousands of patriotic citizens, who thronged the main thoroughfares of the metropolis.' This particular photo was captioned 'The infantry marching past th saluting base at the Town Hall. His Excellency the Governor (Sir Henry Galway) is seen taking the salute.'

Photos from this event also appeared in 'The Critic' newspaper, Wednesday 21 April 1918, page 9, along with a description of the parade: 'The Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Building Fund Appeal, being held in Adelaide. Photos show the procession passing along King William Street last Saturday afternoon. ... The saluting point was opposite the Adelaide Town Hall where a special stand was erected. His Excellency the Governor (Sir Henry Galway) was accompanied by Lady Galway, and attended by Captain Brown, A.D.C., and Mr Legh Winser (Private Secretary). Among those on the dais were the Chief Justice (Sir George Murray) and Senator Newland. A guard was formed by the Base Light Horse, under Captain R.G. Wilton, late of the 50th Battalion, and Lieutenant W. H. Bertwhistle, late of the 27th Battalion. The Mitcham Camp Band, under Sgt-Major Elliott, played patriotic airs. The procession was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Weir, D.S.O., and Majors Darval and Pendlebury, D.A.A.G., followed by the State Commandant (Brigadier-General Forsyth) with Lieutenant Rowell (orderly officer).'
