Captain Sturt stumbled across Australia's largest inland lake and named it Alexandrina after the British Princess who would soon become Queen Victoria. The jetty was built in 1856 and was increased in length twice more. The Port of Milang declined in importance after the line to Morgan in 1878 took away the upper Murray trade

Development of Adelaide 1839-1914: series of lantern slides.

Series of 102 black and white lantern slides numbered 40-145, illustrating the development of Adelaide, 1839-1914. Some slides are of maps, lithographs and sketches made by nineteenth century artists and lithographers. The series juxtaposes views of Adelaide buildings and streets and key landmarks at several time periods, to show the changes and developments in Adelaide to 1914. The streets in focus in this series include King William Street, North Terrace, Stephen's Place, Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Pulteney Street, Grenfell Street, Pirie Street, Gouger Street, Gawler Place and Hindmarsh Square. The following slides are not held: 1-39, 63, 67, 81, 128.

Group of men with an early model car and bicycles

A man sitting in an early model motor car. The car is open with a high steering wheel. Behind him is a group of men; two men to the side have bicycles. The Lewis car first appeared in 1900 with a low bonnet, then again in 1902 with the bonnet raised, no doubt to accommodate the 6hp motor. Vivian Lewis is the man driving, Tom O'Grady is the passenger, Murray Aunger is seated by the front wheel of the vehicle.

Many items have been stacked into tall towers while others are arranged in cabinets. Some of the products include Murray & Sons biscuits and jams (stacked tins centre left), wines by A.E. Tolley and B. Seppelt and W. Fiveash (centre), Chances jams and sauces (stacked jars centre right)and Taeping Mixture Tea. There is a very faint raised stamp on the photograph at the bottom right, 'Captn Sweet Adelaide, landscape photographer'.
