Dashwood Gully
Painting on coloured board of Fernhill, at Dashwood Gully, built by Commander Frederick (P.F.) Servante 1861-2. The following verse appears under the artwork: 'Fond are the memories that bring thee nigh / E'en now unto my heart I with pleasure I / Recall thy circle of dear friends, and still / Ne'er cease to think of thee with love. Fernhill'. This sketch was made by Mrs Hawkins in approximately 1884. In 1884 Mrs Henry Field was in possession of Ferntree (nee Mary Servante). Mrs Hawkins was the wife of a medical practitioner. Captain Frederick Servante (1798-1872) arrived in the "Murray" in 1861 and during 1961-62 built a home in Dashwood Gully calling it Fernhill. The name originated in Essex, England and the house and gardens offered respite from the dust and mosquitoes in the middle of the Adelaide summer.


Captain Charles Sturt
Captain Charles Sturt, born India and joined the British Army, he arrived in Australia in 1827. Australian explorer, in 1830 he discovered and named the Murray River, an event that gave new impetus to the settlement of South Australia. In 1838 he brought cattle overland to Adelaide from Sydney, after which Governor Gawler appointed him South Australian Surveyor-General and Registrar-General. Sturt later undertook additional expeditions into central Australia, but his health failed and he returned to England in 1851.


Captain Charles Sturt
Pencil sketch on paper portraying Captain Charles Sturt. Montefiore was a friend of Sturt and made an original sketch in 1849. It is believed this artwork is a copy of that original sketch, which was used in an obituary to commemorate Sturt, after his death in 1869.

Ramco Village Settlement
Ramco Village Settlement, River Murray. Ramco was founded as a village settlement in July 1894.


Ramco village settlement
Ramco village settlement, River Murray, 21/11/1894. This was one of thirteen communal settlements known as village settlements. They were created to ease the economic depression following the major strikes in the 1890's and the bank crash of 1893. Socialist ideas became popular and utopian schemes were appealing to the unemployed and those struggling to make ends meet. After 1903 settlers were granted their own land, began planting commercially and later the settlement was incorporated into the Waikerie Irrigation Area.


Ral Ral Hotel, Renmark
Ral Ral Hotel, beyond Renmark, on the famous overlanding track from Morgan to Wentworth. It was a well known public house in the early days of Murray settlement. When this photo, taken by G.E. Archer Russell, appeared in the "Observer", March 17th,1923, this building was used as an outhouse at Ral Ral. This was an outstation of Calperum Station, which was known in former days as Bookmark.

[General description] Renmark's first train has steamed into town. Its locomotive has been decorated by townsfolk who have come to celebrate this gala occcasion. Paddle Steamer
Paddle steamer 'Queen', and barge Bourke. Paddle Steamer 'Queen' was built in 1865 weighing 165 tons. On 13th September, 1928 while moored at Goodes Landing at Mypolonga she was burnt to the waterline. She was unoccupied and was one of the oldest vessels on the River Murray. "Queen" traded for nearly 50 years between Morgan and the NSW border swapping skins for flour, tea, sugar, saddles dresses, boots, pots and pans.


Renmark Club House
[General description] The Renmark Club house is a large symmetrical single storey stone building with brick quoins and wide verandahs situated on the bank of the Murray River. This view is taken from the river and shows the front of the building. It was built as an English style 'Gentleman's Club' in 1909 with women being excluded until the early 1960s. It is now a popular venue for all of the community with bar, dining and function facilities.

Strathalbyn
Tom Metcalf carrying a catch of rabbits on Highland Valley Station. He was born in 1900, son of Leonard, 1850-1920, and Ellen Pallant, 1875-1933. He married Edie Sarade and retired to Murray Street, Strathalbyn. This information can be found in 'Old Strathalbyn and its People' by Nancy Gemmell.
