Mount Gambier City Status Celebrations

Photograph of the celebrations in front of the Town Hall to mark Mount Gambier gaining city status on 17th January 1955. The official party is on the dais, there are Australian flags draped in the windows and doorways and the Scottish Regiment of the Royal Australian Army is parading in front of the Town Hall. An Act of Parliament in 1953 changed the population qualification for a country city from 20,000 to 10,000.

In the left foreground there is a building site with partially laid foundations and stone blocks piled up. The main town buildings are in the mid ground: The two storey building on the left (behind the single storey one with the shingle roof), houses the Post and Telegraph Offices. In the centre is the National Bank of Australasia, and on the right is the Mount Gambier Hotel. Note the hand hewn post and rails fences and the sheep hurdles stacked in the centre. Paddocks with gum trees and a view of the Mount are in the background.

A researcher has provided the following information: 'This photograph must have been taken from a hot air balloon, as there are buildings missing, for example the "Old Goal", which was opened in 1866 and still remains today (2019). The"Old Hospital" at the rim of the Valley Lake crater isn't in the photo. It was built in 1869 and demolished in 1971. While the the description says "reproduced in the Observer February 1928, the photo was taken many years before that.'
