The Arthur Studio : SUMMARY RECORD

A collection of over 6500 photographs taken by Mount Gambier photography firm of Arthur & Son (later The Arthur Studio). The images, mostly taken by Eric Arthur, provide a comprehensive visual perspective on the people, places and events from the late 1930s to the 1970s in the Mount Gambier region. The earlier photos are the work of his father, Garnet William Arthur, who established the business.

Reverend Robert A. Caldwell

Reverend Robert A. Caldwell

[General description] Reverend Robert A. Caldwell was inducted on 4th August 1864 into a ministery in the Presbyterian Church that was to last for forty five years. He saw the original church in Mount Gambier enlarged once before Saint Andrews was opened on 10th December 1871. Reverend Caldwell was minister until 1909 when ill-health forced him to retire. He died shortly afterwards, his funeral was the largest Mount Gambier had seen, as all respected and admired him. [On back of photograph] Rev. R.A. Caldwell Presbyterian Minister Mt. Gambier. J.P.L. Schinckel, Mt Gambier trooper. The image could be Johann Peter Leonard "Len" Schinckel, who was born 24 October 1869 at Mount Gambier to Johann Jurgen Schinckel (from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany,) and his wife Charlotte Elenora Margretha BAGONY. They married 27 August 1867 at O.B. Flat near Mount Gambier. J.P.L. Schinckel's father Johann Jurgen Schinckel was an uncle of Simon Schinckel. Simon Schinckel was at one time storekeeper of Rendelsham.

Photograph of the Tonkes' brothers. They are about five and eight years old and they are wearing short trousers and jackets. They are believed to be Barry (right) and Kevin Tonkes, sons of Gilbert and Eileen Tonkes of Mount Gambier. Barry was killed in car accident returning to the Mount from Adelaide around 1990; and Kevin died in the early 2000s.

Moorak woolshed and shearers. Moorak is located in South Australila's Limestone Coast region. Annual sales of stud sheep were held at Moorak and were attended by buyers from all over Australia. John Henty was the first white person to acquire rights over the land later to be known as Moorak. Originally Moorak embraced 35,000 acres and welcomed rifle shooters and picnickers

Portrait of William Allen Crouch who arrived in South Australia on the 'Templar' in 1845. He had a sheep run between Angaston and Freeling, later went to Portland and arrived in Mount Gambier in 1849. In 1852 he took over H. Crouch's store in Mount Gambier. Sold the business in 1870 and went to live at Lowan, Kalangadoo.
