Bark Mill & Tannery

Bark Mill & Tannery

Bark mill and tannery in Edward Street, Mt. Gambier. In 1885 the mill was owned by JA McLeish. In 1955 the site was used as a motor garage by Mr Les Robinson. Bark was stripped from wattle trees, dried and then used for tanning hides. The bundles were taken by drays to Wilkie's mill. The stripped wattle trees died and were later used as firewood. Institute building, prior to the erection of the second story at Mt. Gambier. This stood on the south side of Commercial Road, a little east of Bag Road. This part was erected in 1868. A horse hitching rail stands outside the Institute building.

Commercial Road, Mt. Gambier (the first Telegraph Office next to Institute) a little east of Bag Road. The single storey building in the centre of the photograph houses the offices of the National Insurance Company. A single fronted cottage stands next to this.

Town Hall, Mount Gambier

Mt. Gambier Town Hall, Institute Hall, and Institute (Commercial Street). The Town Hall was constructed in 1882 and first used as Council offices and meeting rooms. The clock and tower were donated by TC Ellis of Benara Station and were added in 1883. The adjoining Institute Library and Hall was constructed in 1869 with the upper storey being added in 1886. The building was used as a library and as a silent movie theatre between 1911 - 1926. A fine stained glass and leadlight ceiling is a feature of this building

'Old Gold' Passenger Plane

Robertson & Millers 'Old Gold' Mt. Gambier passenger plane. May and Davis agents. Aerodrome opposite 1955 'drome'. The aircraft was named 'Old Gold' after a brand of chocolate that Horrie Miller's business partner, Sir McPherson Robertson manufactured.

Dr. Wehl's Flour Mill

Dr. Wehl's hand driven flour mill. He built the flour mill in 1857 and it was the first to be built in the district. After most his patients left for the gold rush in 1852 Dr Wehl commenced milling. He also owned 3000 acres in Gambier East but this proved unsuitable for cropping. He was civic minded and belonged to many local organisations and was married to the sister of Baron von Mueller of Melbourne and together they raised 15 children. He was a kindly man with a generous disposition who treated both poor and rich alike.

Oddfellows Hall at Mount Gambier. The Oddfellow's Hall was built in 1864 and enlarged in 1866. It was located in Watson Terrace. It was used for many concerts, meetings etc. in the early days and prior to 1914 was used for a number of years by the Salvation Army
