Duncan & Fraser

Duncan & Fraser

Duncan & Fraser advertising used as letterhead. [Note: The car depicted is likely to be an Argyll, for although the company became synonymous with Ford cars in South Australia, they apparently were selling Argyll and Standard vehicles in the earliest years of motoring. The motor vehicle in the letterhead looks very Argyll-like for the years 1909 to maybe 1914.][From another researcher: The name Argyll is just visible under the drawing. Duncan & Fraser were also agents for Standard cars from 1908 until the company went into liquidation in 1927. They aquired the Standard agency before they started with Ford but they did not sell in the same numbers and have been largely forgotten.]

Actors

Actors

Daguerreotype of a group of actors associated with the Adelaide stage. According to Jane Messenger in 'A century in focus: South Australian photography, 1840s-1940s', this daguerreotype differs from others of the period due to its informal nature and the way it flaunts contemporary social and pictorial conventions. Portraits of multiple figures were unusual at the time and usually reserved for family groups. This was due to technical complications related to focal distance, plate sizes and exposure times. Messenger suggests that this image is largely experimental in its composition, and is designed to reveal the photographer's sophisticated image creation skills. (p.30)
