Abraham Fordham
Abraham Fordham. According to a descendant, he established the 'Eagle on the Hill' hotel and owned a number of hotels in Adelaide, including Fordham's Hotel in the 1840s. He also organized and ran the first Adelaide show out of the back yard of one of his Hotels. Abraham Fordham arrived in 1837 at the age of 34. He established himself as a hotelier and opened the Fordham's Hotel, later known as the Sturt Arcade Hotel in Grenfell Street. The hotel was originally built from packing cases in which port wine had been brought out from England. He also established the Anderson's Arms on Mount Barker Road, the name of which was officially changed to Eagle-On-The-Hill in 1855. It was renamed because a large hawk/eagle often sat on a flagpole near the entrance. Bushrangers terroised patrons and travellers near the hotel. Abraham Fordham suffered ill health and died aged 61

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Colonel George Gawler in seven eighths view. His grey hair, sideburns and beard are neatly trimmed. Appointed Governor of South Australia in 1838 he arrived in the Colony on October 12th that year. He had great difficulties to contend with, and his administration, though it was at the time condemned by many, is now seen to be appropriate in hindsight. He spent a large amount of both his own fortune and government funds in necessary improvements to the colony. He was recalled in 1841. [General description] Head and shoulders portrait of a bearded Henry Kent Hughes, the subject facing left. He was a pastoralist and Member of the House of Assembly who represented Port Adelaide from 1868-1875 and also served as Treasurer. He had a large house and twenty acres of land named 'Avenel' in Medindie.

Walter Hutley
Walter Hutley was general secretary of the Liberal Union until 1913. He was a prominent Congregational church man and mission worker. He was born in England and arrived in South Australia in 1884. He also served on the State Children's Council and the Mental Defectives' Board. He lived at Largs Bay and died in 1931 aged 73.

Sir Sidney Kidman
Sir Sidney Kidman was an Australian pastoralist who owned large areas of land in Australia. He was born in Adelaide, educated in Norwood and left home at 13 with 5 shillings and a one eyed horse. He joined a drover and made money supplying services. Later with his brothers he bought a station. He went into partnership with various owners and eventually owned a vast network of connected stations stretching from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Flinders Ranges and across to New South Wales. The total value of his company is estimated at A$360 million

Seated, at left thought to be George McCulloch but he is now believed to be the man on the right. A researcher has suggested that the man seated on the right is Philip Charley. [General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Thomas R. Bowman in three quarter view. He was one of four brothers who came to South Australia in 1838 after a few years in Tasmania. With his brothers he was a pioneering pastoralist aquiring properties in the Dry Creek area, later in the mid north at Werocata, Crystal Brook and Martindale. They were reputedly very hard workers, doing much of the station work themselves. Thomas was at the Crystal Brook run for twenty years. He was a generous philanthropist giving large donations to charities in the year before his death.

Sir Anthony Musgrave
Governor Musgrave. His term of office was 1873 - 1877 when he was colonial adminstrator and governor. He arranged funding for railway construction, imposed additional taxes and introduced large numbers of immigrants to settle in the hinterland.

Sir Anthony Musgrave, KCMG
Sir Anthony Musgrave, KCMG, Governor of South Australia, 9 June 1873 to 29 January 1877. While in office he supported the borrowing of large funds to build railways, he also supported imposing additional taxes and encouraged immigrants to settle in the hinterland rather than the main towns. He published various economic pamplets and journal articles including his book entitled "Studies in Political Economy".

Elizabeth Webb Nicholls
Mrs Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (1850-1943) is remembered as a social reformer, women's activist, women's suffragist and editor of "Our Federation" the journal of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She played a large part in women getting the vote in South Australia in 1896. She became victorious when her platform for 6.0'clock closing succeeded in 1915. She justified all reforms on temperance and social purity.

Lawrence O'Loughlin
Lawrence O'Loughlin was a country politician, Member of Lower House, grazier, local government councillor. He was born near Virginia of Irish migrants. He was noted for his administration of land policy. He was champion of the country over city, small mixed farmers and wheatgrowers over the large landowner and squatter. Catholics celebrated him as one of the first of their number to hold high public office in South Australia.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of pioneer Dr. John Rankine in an oval frame. The photograph was taken not long before his leaving South Australia to return to Scotland as his health was failing. He and his brothers arrived from Scotland in 1839 and founded the township of Strathalbyn in the 1840s. He bought up grazing land on Hindmarsh Island and built a large house there. He was a Member of Parliament from July 1854 to April 1857 for the seat of Hindmarsh.

[Genral description] Full length portrait of John Riddoch who emigrated from Scotland in 1852 and made money at the River Owens goldfields, subsequently became, along with his brother George a wealthy pastoralist, later politician. He bought Yallum Park estate in 1861 and built a large Italianate mansion where he entertained a variety of famous people including royalty. He was the first to recognise the famous terra rossa soul of the Conawarra winegrowing district.

Capt. Thomas Rossiter
Captain Thomas Rossiter [1800-1875] has Rossiter Bay in Western Australia named in his honour. He was an Englishman who commanded the French whaler called the "Mississippi". Captain Rossiter saved the life of Edward John Eyre and his offsider from starvation on their epic overland trip from Adelaide to King George Sound. The "Mississippi" was the first foreign vessel to enter Port Lincoln since its settlement. Captain Rossiter also commanded a large brigantine called "Wave of Goole". He used to paint water colours of the places he visited.

The canvas is striped mattress ticking, indicating the difficulty of obtaining materials in Adelaide at the time. The painting is attached on its original timber auxiliary support but with the two side members of the auxiliary support mistakenly reversed.

He was an active philanthropist, giving large amounts to public institutions. He was greatly repected by all and is said to have refused a knighthood.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Samuel White Sweet. He wears a double breasted jacket and a colourful cravat and sports mutton chop whiskers. He was a sea captain who retired from the sea in 1875 and opened up a photographic studio in Adelaide. He travelled through South Australia in his horse-drawn darkroom photographing landscapes, outback stations and homesteads. A large collection of his work is held in the South Australian Archives.

Robert George Thomas was among the first colonists to arrive in South Australia. At only sixteen years of age he arrived onboard the "Cygnet" with Deputy Surveyor George Strickland Kingston. He worked with both Kingston and the firm of Light Finniss. After returning to Britain and designing many large public and private buildings he returned to South Australia and designed many prominent buildings around Adelaide.
