Historical information

One of seven mosaics of photographic portraits created by Adelaide photographer Townsend Duryea in 1872 to compete with his former employee Henry Jones' production of 'The Old Colonists Banquet Group', commissioned by merchant Emanuel Solomon. In addition to two large-scale mosaics of colonists who arrived in South Australia between 1836 and the end of 1840, Duryea created separate mosaics for each of those years that the adult males photographed by him arrived in South Australia. The backing paper is discoloured and extremely brittle and the portraits are faded and brittle. It was donated by A R Jackson via the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1982. The Library already held a black and white photographic copy donated in two parts (combined measurement 65.5 cm x 50.5 cm) by J M Niall of Gisborne, Victoria in 1962. The handwriting listing names and ships is legible on this copy but the portraits are low resolution. Studio prints of the 1839 mosaic were offered for sale by Duryea in the 1870s, but none are held by the State Library. All of the portraits on B 16006 are better represented in other Duryea mosaics.
