Gallipoli photo album

A rare assemblage of snapshots taken [mainly] by Harold Vynne Woods, an ambulance-man at Gallipoli, with scenes in the camps, huts, trenches and dugouts, panoramic scenes of Anzac Cove, beach scenes showing the detritus of the landing and in one case a naked digger bathing, and a fine series of posed and unposed group and individual photographs of diggers, both at rest and on duty. Each window has been numbered (actually mis-numbered) by hand to '50' but a number of the windows are empty at various points through the album and presumably these images have been extracted (or, less probably, have fallen out). It is belived that two of the photographs feature Harold Woods. Photographically this is a remarkably successful series of snapshots, many of the images are beautifully composed and framed and it is possible that Woods was quite experienced. Ownership details on the front endpaper, written in photographer's white ink in the same hand that numbered the windows: "Doris M. Allen. 18 Flinders Street, Kent Town [South Australia]. Photos taken by Harold at Gallipoli April - November 1915". [Numbers assigned to the images relate to those assigned in the album.]
