General notes

The connection between the artist and the Minchin family is as follows: she was a first cousin of Francis (Frank) Hamlyn Hargrave, whose wife Eva was a daughter of Ernest William Minchin and a granddaughter of Richard Ernest Minchin.

Historical information

Ethel Mary Spiller was born at Kent Town in 1876, daughter of John Robert Spiller and Eliza Haldane. Using the stage name Ethel Dane (derived from her mother's maiden name) she became a stage actress in Australia, and later in England and North America, as well as appearing in silent films. She married firstly the NSW-born actor Cyril Keightley, and secondly, the Hollywood actor Louis Wolheim in 1923. Widowed, she returned to South Australia in 1933 and died at College Park on 1 December 1963 aged 87.
