Historical information

The verse in the display was written by Ella Gruin of Kent Town in 1936. It was intended to be sung to the tune of the National Anthem at the State Schools' centenary celebrations as a tribute to Queen Mary. It was decided that nothing could be added to the National Anthem and so was not used but a campaign to adopt it continued until 1942 when the additional verse was officially adopted by the League of Empire.
