Buildings showing the premises of the meat wholesaler firm of W. Foster and Company at 31-33 Manton Street, Hindmarsh. The surrounding buildings were originally part of a tannery run by the company. According to a researcher, the building was also used to department store shop fixtures.

"Duncan" - a horse used by the Hindmarsh Volunteer Fire Brigade in the early nineteen twenties. The horse was named after James Duncan, the Superintendent of the H.V.F.B., 1900-12. Reproduction permission required from the donor; see Library Staff.

Tannery, Hindmarsh
David Reids 'Stirlingshire' Tannery on the northern bank of the River Torrens. David Reid was born at Stirling, Scotland in 1823; emigrated to Victoria in 1857 and thence to Adelaide in 1859, where he entered the tannery of a Mr Dench, as foreman. Later he established the 'Stirlingshire Tannery' and at the time of his death he was employing 60 people. The tannery was then taken over by his son J.H. Reid. See article in 'Adelaide and Vicinity' (1901), page 520.

Crawford's Brewery, Hindmarsh
Crawford's Brewery, Hindmarsh was established in 1859 by well known brewer Mr Edward James Frederick Crawford (1809-1880). He was also connected with the South Australian newspaper and was a sheep grazier at Mount Crawford. He arrived in South Australia with his brother and at one time lived in Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide.
