HINDMARSH: Mill and house at Hindmarsh, now the site of the Entertainment Centre. It was built by John Ridley after his arrival in South Australia in 1840. He returned to England in 1853 and the Mill was purchased by Thomas Magerey in 1850. The remains of the mill were razed to the ground in February 1920.

Wool washing at W Peacock and Sons in the River Torrens. In the 1870s a dam was built across the River Torrens which was 80 feet in length and 27 feet in thickness. The buildings in this photograph stood in Adams Street, Hindmarsh. The wool washing and scouring processes can be seen in this photograph of the fellmongery. (Fell = skins and monger = dealer).

[General description] This is a complex of stone buildings with men at at work in the process of wool washing. The River Torrens had been dammed into several smaller ponds for the cleaning of the wool, then bales were washed and dried before being shipped. The business was later taken over by G.H. Michell around 1900. [On back of photograph] 'Peacock's wool Scouring works, Hindmarsh / 188-'.
