A collection of photographs and colour photocopies of commercial premises, buildings and streets in and around the City of Adelaide (in two volumes), including artists' impressions and designs for redevelopment. Includes some designs for the Remm Group Myer Centre development, with artist's impressions of the interior. The album comprises photographs collected by Messenger Press, many of which have been published in the various suburban editions of the paper. A collection of studio portraits under the title 'South Australian Pioneers 1837', with 'T. Duryea, Adelaide, 1872' at the bottom. This mosaic includes a portrait of Governor Sir John Hindmarsh above 58 portraits, and the handwritten names of the colonists are listed under the ships they arrived in on both sides of the portraits.

A group of men and children pull up the old fence at a children's playground on High Street, Queenstown; Loveder's Woodyard can be seen in the background. According to a researcher, Loveder's woodyard was on the corner of Glebe Street and Port Road at Alberton opposite the church. High street was the up track to Port Adelaide while Port Road was the away road from Port Adelaide (both now Port Road).

Dillon Family of Bowden

Dillon Family of Bowden

Cabinet portrait photograph of the Dillon Family of Park Terrace, Bowden. The couple standing are likely to be Patrick Dillon (born c.1848, and died 8 August 1937, aged 88) and his wife, Mary Agnes (nee Kitson, born c.1860/61, and died 2 July 1942, aged 81). They married on 22 February 1979 in Mt. Barker, and lived at Bowden and later Hindmarsh. They are buried at the West Terrace Cemetery. The births of some of their children are unregistered, so the boys in this photograph may be sons or nephews. One of them is probably John Francis Dillon (born c. 1881, and died 24 December 1912, aged 31). The eldery man in the photograph is probably Patrick Dillon's father Francis who died on 9 September 1887, aged 87 at Hindmarsh. He could also possibly be the father of Mary Agnes Dillon.

[General description] This dead arched gum tree with plaque attached is said to have been the site of Governor Hindmarsh's reading of the Proclaimation of South Australia on 28 December 1836. [On back of photograph] 'The old Gum Tree / Glenelg / 1875-1885 / Presented by Mr. J.R. Tully'.

The old gum tree, Glenelg. The trunk of the bent gum tree is supported by metal braces and a flower garden has been planted underneath the arch of the tree. The spot marked the place where the Colony of South Australia was proclaimed and established as a Province by Captain John Hindmarsh. A well kept hedge has been planted around the park.

Standing on top of the Old gum tree, Glenelg. A man can be seen standing on top of the bowed old gum tree at Glenelg while children stand on the lower branches. The Old Gum Tree is significant in South Australia's history as it was at this spot in 1836 that Governor Hindmarsh delivered the proclamation creating the colony of South Australia.

Old Gum tree, Glenelg

Old Gum Tree, Glenelg from an original painting held in the Art Gallery. Governor Hindmarsh's Secretary George Stevenson read the document known as the "Proclamation of South Australia" under the distinctively arched old gum tree at Glenelg on December 28, 1836. Glenelg is recognised as the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia. The Kaurna people are the traditional owners and custodians of this land.
